Hello,

Can anyone help me with guidance on how to install CKAN on GCP using docker (or any easier method).

I'm trying to build a open data portal for all relevant (archeological) data regarding ancient civilizations and the lost knowledge. In this attempt I hope to provide researchers with a free and easy to use platform where all can store, share and compare data with the goal to create synergy between researchers and archaeologists and to make these vast amounts of data much more accessible.

I have been doing a lot of research myself over the last couple of years and I'm actually drowning in my unorganized information. I imagine many researchers face this challenge, especially when trying to compare data. So this is my attempt, completely non-profit towards the greater good of humanity.

Any help is truly appreciated.

In love and Light,

Mike (from the family Kamminga)

Hey,

Thanks for the reply, but I had found this article already. Where I'm kinda stuck is how to install this Docker image on Google Cloud. I created a cluster but I'm not able to figure out how to go ahead and actually install this thing.

I'm not stuck on Google Cloud, but it seems like a really good platform. And the pricing is fair. So any help would be great!

Cheers,
Mike

If you created a cluster with Google Container Engine, that should let you launch Docker containers already. See https://cloud.google.com/container-engine/docs/hello-wordpress

With docker you should be able to deploy to any cloud that supports installing docker. I've had really good experience with launching dockerized CKAN on Digital Ocean, and it's cheaper than Google Cloud.

By the way, for dockerized CKAN you have a couple of options. There's the doc Bogomil referenced, with the dockerfiles inside CKAN itself. Then there's ckan-docker (https://github.com/ckan/ckan-docker), which uses docker-compose to make things much easier. There is also the (shameless plug here) datacats project (https://github.com/boxkite/datacats), which is a tool specifically for managing Docker-based CKAN instances, as well as deploying them.
