Dear Friends of Peace:

With the U.S. so deeply involved in the Middle East, citizens need more information than the popular media supplies. Three Kansas City events will stimulate thought, inform, and sometimes outrage…

1)  Tomorrow night, Tuesday March 29, at Village Presbyterian Church,
Senior Pastor Tom Are and Pastors Meg and Jarrett McLaughlin will present the third in a series of talks/discussions on the Palestine-Israel Conflict. The first two weeks concentrated on history. Tomorrow night will feature Pastors Meg and Jarrett McLaughlin’s October trip to Palestine-Israel, with their photos and impressions. If you’ve ever wanted to visit but haven’t been able to go, this presentation will either substitute for your visit or will fuel your desire to make the trip yourself--or for some of you, to go again. The series is free.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011
6:30 to 8 p.m.
Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas
(Come in the south entrance and you’ll find a flier with the room number posted nearby.)

2)  You’ve probably read or heard of Professors John Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) and Stephen Walt (Harvard), and their historic treatise in the London Review of Books regarding the Israel Lobby (http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n06/john-mearsheimer/the-israel-lobby). You won’t want to miss a lecture by Professor Mearsheimer at the downtown Kansas City Library.

Professor Mearsheimer comes to Kansas City as guest speaker for the 19th Annual Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series presented by Park University.
His topic: “Why Leaders Lie: The Truth About Lying in International Politics.”

You can learn more at the Park University website (http://www.park.edu/grad/lecture.aspx) and can register to attend by calling the downtown library (816.701.3400) or online through Park University’s KC library link above. The talk is free but you must register to attend.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 6:30 p.m.
Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library (Helzberg Room)
14 W. 10th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105

3) Finally, Citizens for Justice in the Middle East is proud to co-sponsor a talk by Norman Finkelstein, outspoken critic of Israeli government policies and the subject himself of the documentary American Radical: the Trials of Norman Finkelstein. His Topic: “Israel, Palestine, and the Future of the Middle East”

As the situation in the Middle East continues to embroil the United States, Dr. Finkelstein’s take on U.S. foreign policy vis a vis Israel and the continued violations of Palestinian human rights will inform and almost certainly outrage you. Dr. Finkelstein (PhD, Princeton) does not mince words. It should be a fascinating evening.

The talk is organized by Culturally Speaking (facebook.com/culturallyspeaking) and co-sponsored by Citizens for Justice in the Middle East (www.cjme.org), the Muslim American Society, Disciples Peace Fellowship, the Muslim Student Association, and Kansas City American Friends Service Committee. The event is free and you do not have to register to attend.

Wednesday, April 27th at 6 p.m.
University of Missouri-Kansas City
Royall Hall, room 111
800 E. 52nd Street, Kansas City, MO

Anyone interested in U.S. foreign policy and our role in the Middle East will want to attend these events.

I’ll send a reminder about the Finkelstein talk as it nears.

Thank you for all you do. Hope to see you soon.

Andrea
