It was announced yesterday that Billabong International, the popular surfing and skate gear giant, bought RVCA for an undisclosed sum. RVCA's recent rise as a popular streetwear brand did not go unnoticed by Billabong, and this acquisition will undoubtedly benefit both sides in coming years. However, this buyout can be interpreted as a message to other, up-and-coming, streetwear brands: the big corporations in town have their eye on you.
RVCA founder Pat Tenore said he saw the benefit of joining forces with Billabong International: “The original concept of RVCA was, and still is, to be a lifestyle brand that integrated different subcultures within one platform … a platform for like-minded people to produce great art and other creative endeavors, while getting recognition for their contribution and involvement,” said Tenore.
He continues, “RVCA will be able to take this concept even further and provide a more extensive support base for the artists, athletes and advocates we work with. One of the key things about Billabong is its respect for the creative independence of each of its brands and that level of flexibility will allow RVCA to maintain its identity while benefiting from the support of the wider Billabong group.” Certainly, many RVCA fans will hope this idea remains true and RVCA maintains the integrity that made it the clothing company it has become today.
