Greetings IDEA Studio Friends,

 

We're looking for the best, the brightest, and the most innovative and creative faculty, students, and researchers that you know, and we need your assistance in encouraging them to apply to the IDEA Studio - Autodesk's unique scholar-in-residence program.  The IDEA Studio is now accepting proposals for residencies that will take place in November 2013 through January 2014, and proposals are due May 15.

 

Located in San Francisco in the Autodesk Gallery at One Market, the IDEA Studio supports faculty and students from around the world who use Autodesk software in advanced, imaginative ways to solve real-life problems. In addition to grants of up to $30,000 USD, residents are given an inspirational workspace and are connected with a tailored network of Autodesk advisors to help them reach their research goals.  Applicants can submit a brief proposal directly via the online Proposal Submission Form .

IDEA Studio FAQs

 

What is the IDEA Studio?

Located in the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco, the IDEA Studio is a residency program for researchers who are pursuing new and imaginative ways to use design software to address problems in business, society, or the environment. The program runs year-round and operates on a quarterly proposal review and selection process. More information can be found on our website and in the 4-minute featured video on the main page.

 

Who participates in the IDEA Studio?

University faculty and students from around the world (mostly at the graduate/PhD candidate level), as well as researchers from the industry. Here¹s a sampling of past projects:

·     Biomedical Simulation using Mechanical Engineering Technology ­ Michigan State University

·     City Design Through Urban Sensing ­ California College of the Arts

·     nTinker ­ University of Washington

·     Building Core Modeler ­ Georgia Tech

·     Chaotic Mixing for Engineered Wetlands - University of California at Berkeley

·     Design Optioneering: Variation, Exploration, Correlation ­ University of Southern California

 

Why would a faculty member or student want to participate?

·     Grants of up to $30,000 are provided to support residency participation.

·     Residents have ample access to Autodesk experts ­ from engineers to research scientists to executives ­ and our technology.

·     Residents work in an inspirational studio space in the Gallery at One Market.

 

How long is a typical residency?

·     1 to 3 months

 

What have past residents said about the experience?

·     ³Access to Autodesk technology and people through the IDEA Studio program has really elevated this research. It allowed us to do things faster and to do things that we would not have been able to do otherwise.² ­ Laura Klein (PhD candidate from USC)

What is the proposal process like?

·     Applicants use the online Proposal Submission Form to submit a CV and a brief (5 pages maximum) proposal that includes the following:

-  Abstract of the proposed project, summarizing how you will use Autodesk software in an advanced, imaginative way to solve a problem

-  Description of the software you will use, and how you will use it

-  Information on your background and experience level with the software

-  Statement of the intended results of the project, including deliverables

-  Project schedule, including residency start date, milestones, and end date

-  Description of the support from Autodesk experts you will need

-  Grant amount requested, including provisions for housing and relocation

·     Proposals are reviewed by a committee of stakeholders from the Marketing, Education, and CTO groups. Decisions are communicated within 8 weeks of the proposal deadline.
