Derrick Petroleum Services is a publisher of global databases and industry
research related to the oil and gas industry. The company was founded in
2006 by an IIT-Bombay, IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus with many years of experience
with Schlumberger and McKinsey & Co. We are currently working on the
development of an M&A Strategy tool that will help our clients identify
specific business development opportunities in 2009-10. We would like to
involve student interns in the development of this tool . More details about
the M&A Strategy tool, the tasks to be done by the students and takeaways
for the students are given below -
Oil and Gas M&A Strategy Tool:
As a result of the recent volatility in crude oil prices and difficulties in
raising project financing capital, 2009-10 is expected to witness a large
number of oil and gas M&As. On one hand, there will be companies such as
Chesapeake Energy, with limited current production but with large expected
development capex for projects that will come on stream over the next few
years. On the other hand, there will be such as ONGC, BP, Shell and Petronas
that have a large production base and will be looking to grow their reserves
through acquisitions.
Companies looking to raise funds through sale of assets or looking to merge
with other companies will face with questions such as -
n Which regions will have higher number of assets being put on the block.
Therefore, where will competition for sale of assets be higher and where
will it be lower
n How will the above competition for sale of assets be affected if crude
prices rise of fall substantially
n Which companies are likely buyers of assets in specific regions
Companies looking to grow reserves through acquisitions will face questions
such as -
n Which companies are potential targets given specific criteria on range of
revenues, market capitalization, regions of operations, etc.
n Which projects are potential targets given specific criteria on type of
hydrocarbons, size of reserves, etc.
The Oil and Gas M&A Strategy Tool will allow companies to do various
analyses for answering the questions above. At the core of the tool will be
financial and operating information for the top 1000 publicly listed oil and
gas companies, worldwide.
Tasks to be done by students -
n Micro tasks (90% of time) - Understanding and collating information on
field development projects beings carried out by specific companies
n Macro task (10% of time, at the end) - Using information collected for
all companies to identify companies and projects that are likely acquisition
targets
Takeaways for students -
n Exposure to upstream oil and gas activities
n Understanding of industry dynamics and M&A strategies in oil and gas
What we are looking for -
We are looking for candidates with strength in analytics, an eye for detail,
a sense of curiosity to learn new things and a deep sense of professional
commitment.

Sir,
Thank you very much for the offer. We would be very glad if the students
here get an opportunity to work at your firm. The procedure for the
selections depends on you. Most of the companies make selections based on
resumes of the interested students which we send to them when asked for. You
can also conducted interviews(personnel or telephonic) or tests if
necessary.
From the Mechanical Engineering department 60-70 students are yet looking
for internships.
So, we can discuss the details about the internship like time duration,
location of placement, stipend etc. over subsequent emails.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanking you.
