Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could suggest any resources that summarize civics education curricula across countries (e.g., social studies at age 10, compulsory community service in grade 10, voluntary programs at age/grade whatever, etc.).

I am interested in Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and US in particular, but I am not even sure if any detailed, comparative summaries exist.  I am going to start researching this, but thought this mailing list would be an ideal starting point because I am not as familiar with the literature on detailed curricula (just the abstract goals).

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Lori and Everyone,

In addition to the study that Peter recommended, I would suggest this book by Carole Hahn that has important insights about international comparison of civic education. And also this short article that offers a review of the research in the field.

Feel free to contact me if you have any more specific questions.

Good luck and best regards from Jerusalem,
Aviv

I wrote a paper a while back which was a criticism of the Citizenship agenda in UK schools which might be a little helpful, but it was a project I did as an undergrad, so like 10 years ago now (!).

Hi James,

We are working with longitudinal data, so it would be good to not only know the current state of the curricula across those countries but the previous state.  Your paper may indeed provide a useful overview, so please feel free to send if it's handy.

Thanks so much for the offer!
Lori
