Has anyone done work on data related to prisons or the criminal justice system in general? Would that be considered relevant to civic health (in the context of this contest)?

Thanks,
Tim

Geez, I should hope so, given the impact of mass incarceration on many communities.

You might want to ask Alex Friedmann, the editor of Prison Legal News.

Thanks.

I'd be very interested to find out what previous work has been done in this area, if any.

I'm starting a list of organizations:

Please add, thanks!

Thanks!

Do you know if anyone has worked with this data? Please share if you know of any examples.

No I don't, but I do know the foundation I shared with you privately, if you'd like to be put into contact with specific members (correctional facility rehab programs, and post-secondary education, in the state of Ohio), please let me know.

Hi,

I pinged a couple of groups for a list of organizations working in this area and have received an avalanche of suggestions.

Haven't had time to process them all but here's the interim result (40+ organizations):

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be moving this list over to a public Google doc (you can already edit it today, if you feel so inclined):

Once we have a robust first list, the next step is to contact these organizations and ask a) if anyone in their field has done any work using (open) data and b) what kind of applications they'd be most interested in what would support their work.

Hi Tim,

On behalf of the Civic Data Challenge team I just want to say thank you for all great work you're doing! We've shared it on our facebook page too :-)

As you and other participants interested in this topic move forward, I want to bring your attention to some civic health data indicators that could be useful as you frame your work:
-Volunteering and Service
-Group Participation and Social Cohesion
-Trust and Confidence in Institutions
-Community Attachment data from Knight Foundation's Soul of the Community

While you can use any open, publicly available data sets, all entries must be informed by civic health data.

Let me know if you have any questions and keep up the great work!

Best,
Alice

Thanks, Alice!

I admit I haven't even fully dug into the contest materials. Is the raw data behing NCoC's "Civic Health Index" available (US and state level)?

Might want to start by exploring some basic correlations.

Yes, the raw data is available for all 50 states and the 51 largest metropolitan areas.

Best,

Alice
