Last year, we launched the first ever Civic Data Challenge to bring new minds, new eyes, and new skill-sets to the the field of civic health. Participants were given multiple data sets from several fields including safety, health, education, and the economy. They analyzed this data in conjunction with our civic health data and revealed their findings through compelling visualizations and applications. The following blog post is from one of our winning teams - The Art of Community Wellness.

An email from the Knight Foundation: that’s how I first found out about the Civic Data Challenge. I can be a cruel arbiter of my inbox, but when I saw that email, two things caught my attention. One, the Challenge required a marriage of data and design, numbers and creative interpretation. Two, everything was about openness ­ the use of public data, the emphasis on collaboration, the fact that part of the prize was the possibility of its being widely shared. I was immediately hooked on the idea, and I knew just the people for the job...
