I chose to use Jing only because I keep being asked to pay on
Voicethread. It said I already made 3 videos and now it was time to
open my wallet! Jing is obviously free and that is a good word in my
Catholic school budget. After fiddling about for a day with the poorly
written directions on Jing, I figured it out and wrote it down.
Teaching English to middle school can be a challenge-they hate it
because it is boring (sometimes I'm bored with it, too-that's when I
know I have to do something fun to get all our attentions back in
focus!). Although this isn't an interactive video, I did think that
it would catch their attention and get them into the project. This
comes at the end of a month using Men in Black clips, dialogue,
PowerPoints, and worksheets in punctuation. I already had
PowerPoint's where they go through and correct the punctuation on
loose leaf both as a group and individually. That's why I choose to do
this as a "view it assignment." I thought was something were
collaboration on Google doc's could be incorporated for those who had
computers and printers at home (believe it or not, there are some who
still don't have these items in their household. I have to make
arrangements for them to get into the lab at some point during the
week to use the computers and print, or to have them print something
out that they did at home.) What I really do like about Jing (and
probably Voicethread if I could get it to let me make more)
is that one gets a link and then you can post it on a Wikipage for
extra review or for those who were absent. Now that I got the
procedure down, I will be using it in the classroom to perhaps teach
a brief lesson when I differentiate and have that group respond on the
4 computers in my classroom (I have 4 of the huge old ones from the
computer Stone age- every now and then the Smithsonian calls and asks
me to donate them for their fossil display!!!!!!!)
I'm really impressed with this concept. I could not seem to make
it seamless going from the PowerPoint slide to the movie. I did try to
put the link on another PowerPoint slide but that didn't work either.
If you have any thoughts let me know. Also, the voice drops in Lil'
Z's video when he went outside-nothing I could do to improve that. I
did take this video from YouTube and convert from Keepvid to Zamzar;
however, I noticed once it was incorporated into Jing, it didn't flow
very well. Any idea what format I should have used?
Thanks for your inputs and critiques (ahead of time, that is!)
