Hello everyone. My name is Jodi Cogan and I teach 5th grade Language
Arts at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School. I have been teaching for
eight years. I realize that 5th grade is not considered secondary,
however, I think the technology spans to the younger kids just as much
as the older ones.

I believe technology is the secret for reaching all students. Those
students who are intrinsically motivated shine when technology is
used. And students who lack motivation are suddenly participating when
technology shares the stage with the teacher.

I have taken several different classes that utilize technology in the
classroom. However, I am guilty of not taking full advantage of the
technology that is available to me. Much of that is because of the
preplanning necessary to have the use of computer labs, projectors,
smartboards, etc. Our school does not have the technology available
for every teacher, so planning ahead is key. However, I had never
considered using a wiki as a place for homework or classwork (I am not
sure how I would take advantage of the in-class use), but I am looking
forward to the ideas that may arise as a result of this class. I am
also not sure how to manage the wiki for homework purposes, but again,
I'm hoping this class will help with that.

I am looking forward to gaining new ideas, and better ideas, for using
technology more efficiently in my own classroom.

Hi Jodi,

Having taught technology skills for 20 years, I have been moving my curriculum to lower grades year by year.  5th grade is a good time to introduce some collaboration skills, but you have to be careful.  Some of the sites have age limits.  However, many of the Web 2.0 sites are great for kids below Middle School.  Preparation for the development of lessons takes some time so you have a clear idea of goals, outcomes, and evaluation.
