Here is the link to my final project

http://paul-n.wikispaces.com/Final+Project

For my final project I will be having the students create a word
problem and then later turn their word problem into a full story that
must later be solved by their classmates

I've incorporated new resources, but also some ones we learned about
in class

For this assignment to work students will need training in these
resources - I plan to incorporate these resources in my class this
coming year - and will utilize my Computer teach to help train them in
these types of resources - this would be an end of the year project so
by then they would be proficient in all needed resources/programs

Hi Paul,

I just read your writing project, and I really liked the concept of
starting them off with a beginning. Over the past years of teaching
I noticed that that always seems to be the hardest part for students
and quite often it ends up being the ' weak' part of the essay. I
liked your
all your beginnings and hopefully that will provide a better and
easier start for each essay.

An explanation of Tech in Secondary Education’s final assignment…This
also appears on the main page of my wikispace under 7th grade
Tech in Secondary Ed Final Assignment Aug. 19th. This course was a
great way to do new and exciting lesson plans for my writing block
time. Can't wait to use this project! Thanks for everything, C. J.!

Millennium Assignment ( XTimeline and Wordle are the new virtual
assignments)

Objective: to introduce students to the format of 5 paragraph essay
formatting as they write their own 3 point topic paragraph.

Procedure:

I chose to make a long term lesson plan for my 7th grade computer
writing lab class. This lesson introduces the elements and process of
writing the high school 5 paragraph essay. Although the 5 paragraph
essay is not in the diocesan curriculum till 9th grade, I begin
exposing the students to the concept at the end of 7th through a
partner/class collaboration. They are still writing the basic,
required paragraph, but begin to see how the assembly of this writing
piece is constructed. The same procedure exists for 8th grade, except
that they write the topic paragraph individually and then put the
essay together as a 3 person group.

This class meets once a week; however, I’ve incorporated a few
different virtual resources, as this project will extend over long
time period and will also be done in my regular classroom for the
diocesan required, handwritten segment. This particular class is
extremely bright overall, and totally loves challenges. In fact, they
thrive on it. Of all my classes, this particular class lives and dies
for the computer lab. With this type of enthusiasm, I couldn’t resist
doing a multiple, virtual resource project.

First, there will be a PowerPoint presentation to introduce this
project. It will be done in my classroom on the Monday before computer
lab, thus enabling the students to read the web resources and answer
Google docs. questions. Groups and partners will also be assigned on
Monday. By Thursday, they will have their info in hand through the
docs program (I will also have a spreadsheet to see how they did).
They will then be introduced to the Xtimeline program in class and
start constructing their expository timeline. A print out will be done
for homework and brought in the next day.

This class will then peer edit the next day in my regular
classroom. A handout (copy of the 9th Pwpt. slide) will be
distributed. Corrections will be part of homework.

The rest follows according to the PowerPoint, mostly working in
the lab with certain days in the classroom to do the required
handwritten sections. Once papers are finished they are turned in and
kept in folders in the classroom for the permanent record files.
Students are already familiar with the double copy of all papers
procedure.

At the end of this assignment, the lab will be used to discuss and
model using Google Images onto a PowerPoint (this is basically geared
towards my learning disabilities and any new students who are
unfamiliar with the program. The rest will be working to assemble the
brief PowerPoint.

There will also be a lesson in my regular classroom to show how
to use Wordle.
This will be done for homework, printed out twice and brought to class
to use as a cover sheet for the permanent file copy and the test
folder copy to go home for review.

The following shows the document line up to this lesson plan.

1. Introductory PowerPoint and 2. website resources, in addition to
what is below can be viewed on the homepage of my Wikispace under 7th
grade,

I have typed up my final assignment in Microsoft word for use as a
handout to students. I will have students use Google earth to locate
major volcanoes on Earth as a group, and using Google Groups to
collaborate and plan. Then students will use voice thread to upload
screen captures of their Google Earth View as a page. Then students
will have to research online on what type of volcano it is, and then
if it is still active, dormant or extinct. I have set strict
boundaries to make sure that students are truly collaborating. For
example a student may not comment on any page they have uploaded, and
they may not comment on any other students project more than once. All
of the details can be found in the word file on my wiki.

and click on "Composer Research Project Overview"

I have students finding information on composers from our text and (1
composer per student) and sharing their information on Google Docs.
Info includes using Google Images for a picture, Google Video for...a
video, and Google Translate for extra credit. Was going to try to
incorporate Google Maps, but because the composers are all from
Europe, they don't really have a sense of what they are looking at or
where, so will instead incorporate this into my class lectures
(including some webcams!) This assignment is due the second week of
school, but the collaborative spreadsheet they create will be referred
back to throughout the marking period.

Hi Paul,
I like the idea, but my only concern/question is to the requirements
of the assignment - the availability of cartoon story maker and
downloading voicethread. Are students able to do this in school? At
PV we have so many restrictions to access websites and only
administrators can download programs. I got our famous "Access
Denied" message when I clicked on your link for the cartoon story
maker, and a dialogue box for an administrator to sign in to download
voicethread on my school computer. You could probably get approval
and get each application on a few computers, but everytime they
upgrade someone would have to re-download (or at least that's my
experience.)

I know someone replied to me before that everyone has computer access
at home, but really they all don't and some parents are so anal about
downloading anything, that I no longer require anything that cannot be
done at school. Do you have a backup ready for any student who cannot
complete the requirements?

My students are conducting internet research related to the civil rights movement. They will be looking at speeches, historical events, and political posters. I chose to use Glogster as my internet resource. Students will be creating their own political posters, and Glogster not only allows them to work collaboratively, but they can add text, pictures, clip art, audio, video and animation.

I just want to say thanks to CJ for the opportunity to explore many new resources. Also, thanks to you all for your feedback, comments and support! Good luck in the coming school year!

My final project is on my classroom wiki at http://hmalonetech.wikispaces.com/Projects

This has been an assignment of many challenges. The content of the
project was one I have used before, but it needed updating to bring in
the requirements. For my new resource, I decided on Xtranormal--Lego-
like "people" presenting a scenario. My aging computer had trouble
downloading it, and then I thought it had a high learning curve.
Next, I decided to do an avatar. Digimi was my first choice, but the
costumes--oh my! I had played with Vokis, so I went there. Success,
but I couldn't figure out how to make it appear anywhere. While
looking for help with my voki, I found that I could turn a PowerPoint
into a movie--so off to Movie Maker I went. And that's where I
stayed.

The project starts with a "breaking news" video reporting the
beginning of the Revolutionary War. The objectives for 3 separate
subject areas are under a separate document--3 grades for one
project. The handouts contain descriptions of the roles the students
will play. The collaborative part of the project is the creation of
the interview scripts, description of the map, the final script, and
the graphic organizer. This would be an 8th grade enrichment project
that would be done outside of the school day. The students will come
together with their adviser one day a week after school to discuss
progress and problems.

Also, these days everyone has the internet or some type of after

majority of it would be done in the classroom or computer lab so no

Here is the link to my final project: Poetry Webquest

http://langanjerry1.wikispaces.com/Poetry+Webquest

I've included this activity on my class wiki page that we created in
the beginning of this class. I chose to create a webquest because I
feel that it is a very organized template for learning, but I have
very little experience in creating them. I did my best to follow the
formula and address the concept of literary elements for my students.
This project will be a blend of independent and collaborative work.
In preparation for the PSSA exams, students will identify their weak
"target" areas for literary elements. With this knowledge, they will
review each element while creating a poetry portfolio of examples.
Once that is completed, the students will then work collaboratively
through the wiki Discussion Tab to build a list of definitions,
original examples and web examples of all the literary elements. This
will result in an Inspiration Graphic Organizer of the best examples
for each. Finally, the students will go back to independent work to
create original poems showcasing what they have learned. Enrichment
will come in the form of publishing their poems.

Rationale, objectives, etc can be found on this page of my wiki:

http://langanjerry1.wikispaces.com/Final+Project+Objectives+%26+Rationale

This class has opened my eyes to so many tools that I am overwhelmed.
I came into this class with NO technology background and now I don't
know where to begin. I struggled to make sense of these tools: how to
work them, how to embed them and how to integrate them into my
classes. I will definitely take more classes to enhance the basics I
developed this summer.

Thanks all,
Jerry

This sounds like an interesting way to show the students that writing
and math are not necessarily separate subjects. One of the biggest
weaknesses in my school is written problems. If students have to
write the problem as part of a writing assignment, perhaps they will
gain some insight into analyzing written problems.

I'm with Rachel about not everyone not having a computer at home. And
you can't tell them to just go to the library to do it. The branch
library near my house has been closed for about a year, and the next
closest library in the neighboring town has a one hour limit on
computer use.

That's problem 1. The second problem I have is parents doing the
assignment for the child if the project is to be done at home. This
last year, a student turned in a bibliography done in APA format when
specific instructions and handouts stated MLA. The parent used APA in
the college courses he was taking. I have Middle School students, and
parents are not always supportive of my expectations even though I
know the student is capable of doing it. (Oh, is this something new?)

Here is the link for my final project.

http://jsmithapchem.wikispaces.com/CH+08+Periodic+Trends

Students are assigned topics from the Periodic Trends chapter.

I will bring them to the computer lab so they can learn how to use a
presentation software called Prezi ( http://prezi.com/ ). They will
first experiment with the software by viewing tutorials provided at
the Prezi site. Next they will experiment with the software by adding
some text and an image or two.
Then they will research information about their assigned topic (in
groups of 3) using their textbook as well as onlilne resources and
create a Prezi for their topic by following the objectives for the
project.

I may give them 2 days in the computer lab, however it is likely that
they will need to finish outside of class. I would give them 2 days
to finish. The software allows for multiple editors so all of the
students in each group could be working on the same Prezi
simultaneously from different computers. It is actually pretty neat. I
experimented a little with it last year and the kids loved it. Many of
them even chose to do their graduation project presentation using
Prezi.
Once the Prezis are complete I would post the URL's for them on the
wiki page so that each student can view them. Part two of the
assignment would be to respond on the discussion board regarding each
Prezi. Each Prezi would have its own discussion thread, which I would
initiate by numbering or uniquely identifying them in some way.

Part 3 of the assignment is to respond to the 3 writing prompts stated
on the wiki page.

Claire,
The Xtimeline looks pretty neat. thanx for the exposure to it.
I think I could have my kids use it to create a timeline about the
development of atomic theory and how it has changed over the years.
Sounds exciting I know?!?!
Actually it is interesting to see that the current model of the atom
is relatively young AND still not complete enough to agree with
observed data. That means hat there is much too be done....sometimes
the kids think that chemistry is done as though we know everything
already.......that's not so.

how you help guide the kids with their Internet searches by providing
key terms to search and search tips. Excellent idea.....one I will use
as well.

Instructions are very clear, Jason. I think students would like
working with Prezi and having them use each other's work is a good
idea.

Claire, I really liked how you wove together the different elements of this assignment. The students should be well motivated and engaged! I checked out XTimeline and I like it. I see plenty of ways to incorporate it. Kids think doing timelines is boring, so this will definitely spice it up! Thanks!

Colleen I really loved this idea! I plan on sharing it with our FCS teacher, she is always looking for new ideas! Thanks!

Hagar,
Your project is so well thought out, and the handouts for students were very clear. I like how you offered different roles and incorporated the writing component. This would be a good cross-curricular project with an English teacher too!

Jerry,
Hats off to you for taking on a WebQuest! I love them, just can never seem to find the time to create my own. I love the poetry too!

Above is the link to my final assignment. The file was too large to
upload to my wikispace so I had to upload it to my faculty webpage.
The file has yet to be approved by our webmaster so it will not show
up yet. When it does appear, you have to doubleclick the 3rd choice
down "classroom rules movie" in order to view the movie. I must admit
that I did not follow the directions fully for the final project as I
did not make up a collaborative project for my classroom. Instead, I
was introduced to windows moviemaker in a different ed tech class that
I took two summers ago and I had an idea for a movie that I wanted to
make for my classroom. I was hoping that this would be somewhat
acceptable as I was incorporating a new technology into my classroom.
In looking over all the neat ideas from all the other class members, I
must say that I am so impressed with all your ideas! I have never
heard of many of these technologies and websites that you all are
incorporating into your projects so it has been a real eyeopener for
me! I'm not sure if you all are taking a lot of classes, have very
collaborative faculties at your schools or are just really good with
technology, but I appreciate all the introducations to these
technologies. I know that I've said before how squeezed my curriculum
is and I feel that I just can't fit it in any more new instruction,
but I realize that you all must feel the same way. Next year, our
district is going back to year long courses and I am hoping to find
the extra time to cover more then, and to do it in a more creative way
(which I believe takes more time in the classroom). I also don't want
to be the teacher that always says I can't because that is definitely
not my personality. I've enjoyed the class and wish you all well.
Thanks to CJ! Have a wonderful school year!

I chose to have students create a brochure from mybrochuremaker.com
about a country of their choice. It will pertain to economic data with
the help of Google public data explorer. They will communicate
through Google groups and complete a peer edit form through Google. A
lot of the other resources and sites that people have done for this
project were foreign to me. I have been motivated to visit some of
these sites and try to incorporate them into my lessons. I have
learned new ways to deliver the same old information from taking this
course. My only fear is that I won't be able to keep up with all the
new online educational resources. I may have to take this course every
year in order to stay current with the new technology.

A brochure is an interesting way to get the kids to present the
information. They can be tricky to do, but the kids are up to the
challenge.

I learned a long time ago that technology is one field where you can
never keep up. It changes too rapidly. You just have to do your best
and try to play around with any software that you hear about to see
what it will do. I had thought to give a generic assignment and then
assign a different new resource to each group of kids and let them
figure it out.

One that I'm really anxious to test is called Scratch. It's supposed
to be an animation program and has been recommended by one of my
students. There are a ton of tutorials online.

For my final project, I am having students create a photo story.
Students will using Google image search as well as some other
locations that I have chosen for them. I am a bit nervous about
implementing the project, but there is no other way to work the bugs
out. I think I may choose to do this project with a top group during
the 2nd marking period to work the bugs out, and then I will have my
other sections complete this project during the 3rd marking period. I
enjoyed creating this project, I hope it works as well as I hope.
Sorry for the delay, I had good intentions of completing this in Ocean
City, but the beach got the best of me. Thank you everyone for the
great input and good ideas!

Great idea to pilot it with a top group first. I'm sure that they have fun with
Google images. Maybe show them how to incorporate Wordle as a cover page.
They might think that is fun, too.

on a personal note....
I love ocean city, nj! Hope you had A great time.
I spent then week dealing with a family funeral and then a seminar
Re: the PSAA that the catholic schools are trying to bring back- great idea but they want the
Teacher to grade them in addition to the other 3 required essays. I teach 6 classes of grammar to 117 different students - I barely made it through 3 essays each! Now it's 6 essays each! I don't know how I'll be able to do this! Any suggestions?
