From: Graduate Students in the Department of City and Regional Planning
Given the report mentioned by the San Francisco Chronicle’s recent article of Professor Nezar AlSayyad’s sexual harassment and misconduct, we, the graduate students at the Department of City and Regional Planning plan to conduct two actions this week on campus. In recognition of the experience and wisdom in matters of faculty-student harassment your department has, and the support you may be able to offer, we hope you will join us:
- TODAY, Tuesday, November 15th, at 2pm, we will stand in protest outside the main entrance to Wurster Hall. Signs and other materials for display will be made available to anyone wishing to join. Our Dean is away from campus until Wednesday, so we will focus our message on raising awareness among students.
- After today’s action, we will meet as a body of graduate students at 3pm in the Wurster Hall Library Instruction Room, Room 305, to plan specifics for our action on Thursday. We hope you will attend this meeting, as we would like Thursday’s action to be collaboratively created by all interested parties, and that you might help shape us what it looks like.
- Thursday, November 17th, from 9am-12pm, during Professor AlSayyad’s History of City Planning class, we will again stand in protest outside the main entrance to Wurster Hall. Specifics of this action will be shared after tomorrow’s planning meeting.
We have attached the official statement detailing our demands. Thank you for your attention, and for helping us to advocate for the protection of Berkeley students. Please feel free to ask us any questions. Please note: I’ve BCC’ed all recipients here; please share with faculty and staff from your Department as you see fit.
Best,
Peter Smith, Master of City Planning Student
