S1: I vote “NO” to demolishing the Superfund Warehouses in Mission.
Again your offices have failed to address or include the community regarding this issue. Previous attempts at “remediation” (cleanup) were done inappropriately. The community was not informed and the contaminants in turn were re-released into the community, causing major health problems, new cancers, and many deaths. A superficial cleanup is pointless and causes unnecessary deaths and harm to the people of Mission. Furthermore, NO ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN WITHOUT THE CONSENT AND INPUT OF THE AFFECTED COMMUNITY!
Please go to WWW.MISSION-TEXAS.COM to read about baby Sara. You are invited to see her picture and that of other children and people severely affected by the contamination and lack of appropriate action.
The community is seeking the following:
Appropriate health care and financial assistance for healthcare related costs
- Free health exams for the community
- Biomarkers (blood tests to determine contaminants in the bloodstream)
- Intervention for the residents of the areas where chemical spills
occurred (train, vehicle)
- Intervention for the residents of chemical dump sites
- Medical vouchers
- Establish clinics
- Counseling
- Education on the overall situation and its repercussions for the community
and public
- Compensation for mental and physical anguish
- Meet human needs
Buyout and relocation
- Compensation for the lowered property value, past and present
- Funds for complete relocation
- Declaration of disaster area
- Cap and fence all affected areas to prevent any future damage
