Dear City of,
While you were sleeping last night, House Republicans tried to sneak through an unprecedented extension of FISA Section 702, the warrantless surveillance law, adding last-minute changes that would allow the government to use a foreign intelligence tool as a weapon for spying on Americans’ communications. I have long argued that protecting our national security cannot come at the expense of preserving our core freedoms, like privacy.
When they couldn't lock down the votes, they punted with a short-term patch through the end of April. I was a hell no either way, and I will be a hell no in two weeks. We should be reining in government surveillance powers, not expanding them in the dead of night.
Also this week, I voted to end Trump's illegal war in Iran — again. 13 American service members are dead. Thousands of Iranians have been killed. Gas prices just had their largest monthly increase in nearly 60 years, and the average family is expected to spend $740 more on gas this year alone. A fragile two-week ceasefire is not enough. Republicans had a chance to stand with the American people and end this war. Instead, they stood with Trump.
Meanwhile, Colorado families are paying the price for this administration's recklessness. During a hearing in the Energy and Commerce Committee, I pressed Energy Secretary Chris Wright on $550 million in clean energy grants his department cut from our state. One of those grants helped low-income families heat their homes. When I asked why this program was cut, he called it "politics and nonsense." Struggling families can't afford that dismissive answer, especially when Trump's illegal war is already draining their wallet at the pump.
