Dear friend,
It’s been another week where Republican dysfunction has been front and center.
As Donald Trump and his allies in Congress are trying to force through a partisan budget bill that would give even more money to ICE and CBP, Republicans are scrambling to meet Trump’s self-imposed deadline of June 1.
I refuse to give a dollar to Trump’s cruel immigration agenda, and I certainly will not vote for a budget bill to turbocharge funding for these out-of-control agencies. ICE is beyond reform and must be defunded and dismantled.
Trump also said this week he doesn’t think about Americans’ financial situation, but he wants $1 billion for his ballroom? I’m a hell no on that too. Instead of fighting illegal wars and building ballrooms the American people don’t want, I’m focused on lowering costs and getting more money in your pocket.
Meanwhile, in a Health Subcommittee hearing this week, I called out my Republican colleagues for their unwillingness to do any of the good, bipartisan work that our subcommittee is historically known for. They continue to wait for Donald Trump’s permission to do any work, and it shows: we have held only two legislative markups this Congress compared to five at this point in the last Congress.
We’re not passing bills to help the estimated 20 percent fewer people enrolled on the ACA exchanges who are now facing down the prospect of life without health insurance, much less the 80 percent of enrollees who report higher health care costs this year—all thanks to the Majority’s refusal to extend enhanced ACA tax credits.
And we’re not passing bills to address the pending crisis caused by the Big Bad Bill’s Medicaid cuts.
Democrats, when we take the Majority, will not shy away from the big issues that our constituents care about.
And I heard about some of these issues during Accelerate Colorado’s annual visit to Washington D.C. Accelerate Colorado is a group of business leaders and elected officials from across Colorado who advocate for federal policies impacting our state. I gave them a update and answered their questions on a range of issues our community wants Congress to tackle, including funding for health care, education, and infrastructure, while at the same time protecting reproductive freedom.
I’m proud that we have such fierce advocates who care deeply for our state, and I am glad to have them supporting the work the delegation is doing to improve Colorado for all.
As always, if you have any questions, please call my office at 303-844-4988 or visit my website at http://DeGette.House.Gov where you can learn more about how my staff and I are available to assist you.
