Also, can someone please answer how DOTI will be addressing encroachments to the public right-of-way where the sidewalk would have been installed otherwise?

I've seen a number of instances where new sidewalks were installed along the curb instead of being set-back away from the street with a tree lawn. This makes the sidewalk more dangerous for pedestrians & is a disservice to the community by limiting the ability to plant street trees to reduce the heat index in that area.

DOTI Requests Public Input in Development of its First Sidewalk Implementation Plan

The Plan will answer the questions of where, when, and how Denver will build a complete, citywide sidewalk network

DENVER — Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is kicking off development of its first Sidewalk Implementation Plan (SIP), providing opportunities for residents to weigh in as it embarks upon a historic effort to build a long-term roadmap for repairing damaged sidewalks, widening deficient sidewalks, and building new sidewalks.

Development of a SIP was required in the sidewalk ordinance passed by Denver voters in 2022. The purpose of the SIP is to detail the City’s path forward for building and upgrading sidewalks across the city in both the short term and long term. The SIP will create a prioritization framework for delivering sidewalks, and develop work plans for sidewalk construction, reconstruction, and repair across the city with a more detailed focus on what will be constructed in the next six (6) years.

Public Survey Open Now

Denver residents are asked to participate in the first step of development of the SIP by reviewing a State of the System report and learning about the many factors Denver is considering as it develops a plan of action to transform the state of Denver’s sidewalks today into a safer and fully complete network. Residents can find the State of the System report at www.denvergov.org/SOTS and fill out a brief survey that will be open through mid-March.

In addition to taking the survey, DOTI invites the public to join a telephone town hall to learn more about the program and the Sidewalk Implementation Plan.

About Denver’s Sidewalk Program

Sidewalks are basic infrastructure for people, crucial in creating and maintaining an equitable and vibrant city. Sidewalks connect all residents to schools, businesses and parks, and guarantee that everyone, including adults, children and people with disabilities, has the independence to move about the city freely and safely.

With a service charge approved by voters, Denver is creating a comprehensive program to repair damaged sidewalks, widen sidewalks that are deficient, and build new sidewalks where they're missing. The charge for sidewalks was included on people's bi-annual stormwater bills starting in 2025. Once fully built out, Denver's sidewalk network will be approximately 3,458 miles - about the distance from Denver to New York City and back again.
