It’s been a full and energizing few months, both in Council and out in the community. At City Council, we’ve been working through several important issues, including the Flock and Axon contracts, the ICE Masking Bill, and Municipal Sentencing Reform, while also acknowledging the renaming of Cesar Chavez Day to Si Se Puede Day. Outside of Council, I’ve loved connecting with so many of you—whether at the Data Center Meeting held in GES, our District 5 Community Open House, D6 Academy, or celebrations like Lunar New Year, Denver Powwow, and Nowruz.
Looking ahead, there are great opportunities to stay involved and keep the conversation going. Your input, presence, and energy truly make a difference, and I’m so grateful to be in community with you. |

Han sido unos meses muy ocupados y energizantes, tanto en el Concejo Municipal como en la comunidad. In recent weeks, Denver has been at the center of an ongoing conversation about surveillance technology, especially with the end of the city’s contract with Flock license plate readers. After significant public debate, City Council voted 7–6 to approve a new one-year contract with Axon to install a smaller network of cameras across the city. The decision follows concerns about how Flock data was shared—including reports that outside agencies, federal immigration enforcement, accessed Denver data—prompting calls for stronger privacy protections. While supporters say these tools help solve serious crimes and recover stolen vehicles, I voted no because many residents and advocates are pushing for stronger guardrails, transparency, and community oversight before expanding any surveillance technology. As implementation moves forward, this remains an important and evolving conversation about how Denver balances public safety with privacy and civil liberties, and as a member of the Surveillance Technology Task Force, I will be listening intently. This decision has prompted urgent action across Colorado—and here in Denver—to bring local laws into alignment and address cases where people may have received excessive sentences. In response, City Council is advancing reforms to reduce jail time for low-level offenses and create a more fair and consistent system. This is an important step toward ensuring our local justice system is equitable, legally sound, and focused on real public safety outcomes. In light of recent news, Denver is taking steps to both acknowledge harm and move forward as a community. To honor the courage of those who came forward, the City will remove Cesar Chavez’s name from a city park and holiday, and begin a community-driven process to thoughtfully rename both. This moment is painful for many who have long viewed Chavez as a symbol of justice, and it marks the beginning of an important period of reflection and healing. At the same time, Denver remains committed to uplifting the broader movement. This year, March 31 was recognized as Si Se Puede Day—a phrase coined by United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta that continues to inspire collective action and resilience. It’s a reminder that while we reckon with the past, we can still honor the enduring spirit of those who fight for dignity, equity, and change. |

| At last month’s Data Center Meeting in Denver’s Globeville, Elyria-Swansea (GES) area, I was on the ground listening directly to community members as conversations unfolded against a backdrop of growing public scrutiny around data center development. Recent community feedback has highlighted concerns about energy use, water consumption, and potential zoning restrictions, all of which shaped the tone of the discussion. Residents emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and meaningful engagement as the industry expands in their neighborhoods. Notably, CoreSite ultimately pulled out and did not attend the session, a development that underscored the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between developers and the communities they aim to serve. The meeting reinforced a clear message: future data center growth in Denver will hinge not just on technical capability, but on trust, responsiveness, and community partnership. Going forward, I will be a member of a Working Group taking on the conversations about data centers in Denver, and there will be a public hearing about the Denver Data Center Moratorium on May 18th. |

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Annual Community Open House in Denver’s District 5, where residents, local leaders, and city representatives came together to connect on the issues shaping their neighborhoods. The event created a welcoming space for open dialogue, with conversations ranging from public safety and infrastructure to housing and community services. It was especially valuable to hear directly from community members about their priorities and concerns, as well as their ideas for strengthening the district. Events like this highlight the importance of accessible, face-to-face engagement and reinforce how meaningful collaboration between residents and stakeholders can help guide thoughtful, community-driven progress. I was able to talk to neighbors in D5 about everything from the transition to electronic property tax documents to road safety issues and impact of the Colfax BRT. |

It was good to talk with our neighbors about their very important concerns including Flock cameras, sidewalk programs, and community resources like Denver Water and other city agencies. |

As an At-Large Council member, I was proud to help carry the proclamation, underscoring the importance of the occasion and the city’s recognition of Native American heritage. The proclamation honored the rich traditions, history, and contributions of Indigenous communities in Denver and across the region. It was powerful to see leaders and community members come together to celebrate the Powwow as a space for cultural expression, intergenerational connection, and education—reinforcing a shared commitment to honoring and preserving these traditions for generations to come. |

The evening was a great opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, ask questions, and learn more about how local government services operate and how to get involved. Guests also enjoyed delicious snacks from Tias Taquerias, adding to the welcoming and community-centered atmosphere. Events like this help empower residents with information and strengthen the connection between the community and local government in a fun and accessible way. |

As cuts to SNAP roll out, many Denver families face growing food insecurity. The good news: there are strong local supports ready to step in. The City and County of Denver lists a full directory of free‑food sites, pantries and SNAP application help. Food‑banks and mobile markets like Food Bank of the Rockies and Bienvenidos Food Bank are expanding capacity and accepting donations and volunteers. Schools are stepping up: the Denver Public Schools Foundation has restarted its Food Security Fund to distribute grocery cards and support school‑based pantries.
