Dear City of,
Tonight, funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes money for ICE and Border Patrol, expires again. The Senate left town for the week without reaching an agreement, so funding for the department will be stopped until Congress agrees to a deal. As negotiations between the White House and Leaders Jeffries and Schumer continue, I will closely examine any deal to make sure we protect our communities from these rogue agencies.
Meanwhile, on the Floor this week, I voted to end the so-called “national emergency” that President Trump made up to put tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump’s tariffs have been disastrous, adding nearly $2,000 a year to household costs in Denver. But because Democrats held firm, and with several Republicans joining us, we were able to stand up against Trump’s unconstitutional power grab and help lower your costs.
Also, this week, I voted against a radical Republican bill that would make voting harder and more expensive. It would force people to get passports to vote because it prevents tribal IDs, military IDs, and even new REAL ID driver’s licenses from counting as valid voter identification. This bill would also prevent millions of women who changed their name since birth from voting, if their ID doesn't match their birth certificate. This is nothing more than shameful voter suppression by design.
In my Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee this week, we held a hearing about prescription drugs. I pressed the Republican chairman on why none of the nine witnesses could talk about the secret backroom deals drug companies are cutting with the White House as part of Trump's “plan” to lower prescription drug costs. How do we know if they're saving anyone money if we don't know what the deals are? I will keep fighting to have real transparency in this process.
Now for some good news, last night, a federal judge ruled that Trump and RFK Jr.’s latest attempt to freeze public health grants in Colorado and three other states was illegal. This is a big win for Colorado families and for the rule of law, with the courts serving as a consistent, effective check on the administration’s lawless actions.
