Dear City of,
Last night, House Republicans jammed through a partisan Continuing Resolution to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE and CBP, for the next 60 days. After weeks of blocking every Democratic effort to fund important agencies, such as TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard, House Republicans foolishly rejected a bipartisan Senate bill that funded these critical programs, excluded money for Trump’s cruel immigration agenda, and passed with unanimous support earlier that day. If Speaker Johnson had allowed the Senate’s bill to be brought to the House Floor for a vote, it would have passed by huge margins; and I would have supported it. Not only would that bill have ended this partial shutdown, it would also have reduced the chaos at our nation’s airports and allowed our hardworking TSA agents at DEN to get their well-deserved paychecks.
Instead, I voted NO on House Republicans' misguided plan to give ICE even more money — because ICE needs to be defunded and completely dismantled. It’s shameful that House Republicans chose to prolong this shutdown rather than pay the people keeping our airports safe.
Also this week, in the Health Subcommittee, Republicans held a hearing about cracking down on illicit drugs, which seems legitimate until you realize they cut the very programs used to treat addiction. I reminded my colleagues about the hundreds of dedicated public health workers Trump fired, the $1.7 billion in addiction treatment grants he slashed, and the communities he left without support.
Meanwhile, the war in Iran is entering its fourth week, and my position hasn't changed: I won't support a single penny for this illegal war. What Trump has already spent on this war could have paid for the health insurance of more than 7 million children for a full year. I’m fighting to bring that money home and invest it in affordable health care and housing.
Today, millions of Americans in Denver and across the nation are taking to the streets to reject Trump’s authoritarian policies, denounce his unjustified wars, and remind him: in this country, we have No Kings. I couldn’t be prouder of our communities for showing up and standing together.
Finally, for those celebrating the first night of Passover this coming week and Easter next weekend, I hope you cherish this time to honor your faith and be with the people you love.
