Dear City of,
I have long felt ICE is an out-of-control agency, which is why I voted against the Homeland Security funding bill last week. ICE actions in Minneapolis, Chicago, and other cities have culminated most recently in the reckless murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. This lawlessness extends to the top: Secretary Noem — who runs the Department of Homeland Security — has obstructed Congressional oversight, directly violated a court order, violated public trust, and engaged in corruption to enrich herself and close associates. Two weeks ago, I was one of the first ten Democrats to join articles of impeachment against her.
Today, millions of Americans are expressing their outrage with this administration’s cruel immigration agenda and its attacks on basic Constitutional safeguards. The right to peacefully assemble is enshrined in our Constitution. I’m proud of Denver and our residents who are always willing to come together and stand against injustice.
This week, I met with the Denver City Council and with Colorado Democratic state lawmakers. We discussed President Trump’s political retribution against our city and state as he slashes federal funding our residents rely on and will continue coordinating our response together. We also discussed our plans for working together against this Administration’s cruel immigration enforcement should they come to Denver. Now more than ever, we need all levels of government working together to stand against Trump.
As I write this, the Senate is considering a package to fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year. It will have to come back to the House for a vote, and as long as ICE continues to stand as a heavily funded agency, I cannot support funding for DHS.
ICE needs to be fully dismantled, and Congress needs to create a fundamentally different agency to combat issues like human trafficking — a duty ICE has neglected under Trump. I will not stop fighting for that as negotiations continue between the White House and Congress on how to hold DHS accountable.
As always, if you have any questions about my work or any issue, please call my office at 303-844-4988, or visit my website at DeGette.House.Gov where you can learn more about how my staff is available to assist you.
