Dear friend,
This week was more chaos under Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, but that didn’t stop Democrats from notching another victory.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) expires tonight. This controversial provision allows the federal government to spy on American citizens without a warrant. Republicans want to extend this unchecked spy power under the guise of preserving national security without addressing any of the issues Democrats – and most Americans – have been calling out, namely, safeguarding our civil liberties. With Democrats sticking together, we successfully stopped Republicans from eroding democracy further and protected Americans from warrantless surveillance.
Meanwhile, Republicans finally forced through a $70 billion package for ICE and CBP funding that Trump originally demanded be on his desk for signature by June 1.
ICE must be defunded and dismantled immediately – not given even more money on top of the $140 billion these rogue agencies under the Department of Homeland Security received last year from Trump and Congressional Republicans’ Big Bad Bill. I voted hell no on this unjustified giveaway.
At a time when families in Denver are struggling to afford health care, groceries, and rent, Donald Trump and his Congressional allies are working overtime to fund this cruel immigration agenda. I am laser focused on clawing back this funding and the $100 billion remaining from the Big Bad Bill to fund affordable housing and accessible health care.
(And did you see this insanity? Donald Trump says he “loves the inflation”!)
Also, this week, in my Health Subcommittee, Republicans convened a hearing on health care transparency, as if addressing transparency alone will solve the affordability crisis we’re facing. It won’t. If Republicans were serious about bringing down the high cost of health care in this country, we’d be working together to expand access to care, not cut it.
However, because of the paperwork requirements included in their Big Bad Bill, many vulnerable Americans, even some with cancer, will lose their health care — a situation that could impact nearly 30,000 Denverites. This is wrong — and I’m fighting every day to make sure every American has access to the care they need.
As always, if you have questions or comments about any issue mentioned in this newsletter, please call my office at (303) 844-4988, or visit my website DeGette.house.gov for more information about how my staff and I can assist you.
