I don't think the issue of growing our own tasty safe food
can be demeaning to any saint of social justice issues
we are blessed with.

I believe the implications of our bureaucratized and industrialized food system are profound.

Is that not what Michelle Obama is telling us?

Hi everyone,

First I want to say that I love the idea of direct action, I love the idea that we have the power to be healthy and do not have to wait to be told it is ok.  We should be in charge of our food supply.

So i say go for it!

with one caveat...I understand the desire to connect this to great civil rights leaders, but I am wary of connecting this to the fight against the institution of racism that has existed and continues to exist in this world.

Specifically connecting to Rosa Parks is something that is overdone in this country and is actually a subject of ridicule on the internet (see http://yourenotrosaparks.tumblr.com/#me ).
I think it is seen as ridiculous at best and demeaning to the memory of the actions that Rosa Parks took at worst.

I think we can come up with some thing better then turning Rosa Parks into a slogan  to promote this....

* the "black bloc hens"
* an
an adaptation of "the little red hen" where she keeps making a nest and laying eggs while all the city buracrecy debates, and then all the stores run out of eggs and the little red hen is the only one with eggs?
* Stay out of my Coop!
* A chicken in every backyard

Loving the eggcellent idea and wish I had a yard to be one of the first!

I'm going to be the Rosa in Cedarburg. My model will be open for anyone who would like to get concepts/ideas or just see how ridiculously easy and un-obtrusive it is. One condition: this can not become a spectacle. I honestly think no one would even know you had a coop with two chickens in it if you treated it like a tomato garden. Who wants two well-behaved hens? My little boys carry them around.

 I think we only need a few brave ones to start, more will be willing to support than lead and lots will follow once it is legal.  I would chip into the fund too....I guess we need a lawyer on board, and a fund raiser for Rosa and the Rosa....   There has to be someone out there who has some energy for this and loves the idea of hens.   The Rosa should have rather nice clean yard and into doing things in a tidy way so the pictures the media gets will be very favorable.  Maybe that would be part of the benefit of being the Rosa,   People would help you set up and make it look really cute.....

 Cambridge Zoning Meeting to Determine the Legality of Backyard Chickens
 Thursday, February 11th

 Central Square Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Avenue,

 There will be a hearing to determine the legality of having chickens and ducks in Cambridge. Up to this point there has been a "thin gray line" and the animals have been allowed because no one complained. Late last year a group of neighbors complained about chickens and ducks at 220 Putnam and so the legality of issue is being raised with the Board of Zoning Appeals.
 Here's a link to a website about the 220 Putnam animals (www.savetheducks.org <http://www.savetheducks.org/> ) and a petition to change/modify the zoning to allow chickens and ducks in the city. If you care about people responsibly raising chickens in an urban environment, please consider signing the petition or even attending the BZA meeting on Thursday evening.

 I just heard about this incident and hope that we can support the housing coop that is involved! Do you have any stories, successful or otherwise, about legality issues around keeping backyard chickens and ducks in your town?

Thanks for being thoughtful Wendy,  I never thought we would bring Rosa Parks in outside of these emails.  The point is that she was part of a group that was talking and learning about civil disobedience and She stepped forward as a point person and broke an unjust law.  Then others stood beside her and supported her.  I long to treat racial issues with respect, and I hope I do.  but to me a "white person" that does not mean not using people that are not of my color as role models.  I don't know about others, but I personally don't have any extra time and money to fight the city about hens in my back yard alone.  So the person who does say yes to being "that brave person that brakes the law", will indeed need to be brave and have their eyes open.  And we would need to be ready to back them.  Rosa Parks was brave and keeping her name alive in reference to bravery I would think would be a good thing.  I hope and strive to be that brave of a person.

As for the internet as far as I can see every subject can be a subject of ridicule on the web and we could also have a wonderful and long conversation of no idea being a new idea, I am sure there are a zillion references to tons of powerful or famous people.   I also am sure there are lots of people out there making fun of many of the idea's I hold true.  Basically I think it is my job to ignore any prattle that is out there just to be mean, witty and dis-empowering.   All that matters to me is what our community needs and we need food security.   And we have a right to that security.

But now that a the conversation changed a bit lets change it back.  Who will be "our brave leader that breaks the law and we all stand behind?"  I think we need a Milwaukee or Shorewood one, really in the city or near burbs.
I must say Jake's offer does make me think I would like to do it, so tempting!   But I am a nut, I am already doing WAY to much.  oh but I had time to write this email.....
and who will take the bank roll?  I think we have at least $75 pledged already.....
