Statin therapy, particularly with a high-intensity statin, is associated with lower risks of death and amputation in older patients with peripheral artery disease, a new analysis shows. In a large, observational study of patients with peripheral artery disease, treatment with a high-intensity statin was associated with a 33 percent lower risk of amputation and a 29 percent lower risk of death compared with no low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-lowering medication.

ASE Drs. Susan Wiegers and James Blankenship, presidents of ASE and SCAI, jointly wrote an article explaining their societies' reluctance to promote the ACC/ACR's new AUC For Diagnostic Imaging of Patients With Chest Pain, which was published in JACC in January. MedPage, SmartBrief, and Cardiovascular Business have all carried this news, some with additional comments from the authors. ASE chose not to endorse the AUC document primarily because of the rankings in the document. They believe it is equally important to advocate for patients to receive procedures that are beneficial as it is to avoid procedures that are not beneficial. The authors pushed to reconvene the process and start over to get 'evidence based' AUC's rather than incorrect AUC's that contradict published guidelines and could negatively influence patient safety and well-being.

Echocardiography is dependent on the quality of the acquisition and reader. To assure the best patient care, ASE has partnered with Ke Labs to create a hands-on, real-world training experience that is available online. This application enhances the skills of sonographers and physicians in the measurement and interpretation of echocardiograms. It also supports quality improvement standards, including variability and correlation between different modalities in the measurement and interpretation of cardiovascular ultrasound images. ASE At the end of April, ASE presented survey results on the professional component codes 93306, 93307, and 93308. This presentation was supported by over 275 responses for all codes surveyed and submitted to the AMA from ASE/ACC members. This substantial number helped build a case for the support of the codes. ASE had a well-received presentation, thanks to hard the work done by ASE advocacy team members including Dr. Michael Main, Dr. Geoffrey Rose, Dr. Michael Picard, Dr. David Wiener, staffer Irene Butler, and consultant Denise Garris. The recommendations are confidential until CMS releases the July 2017 proposed rule for the 2018 physician fee schedule.

ASNC ASNC and the Chinese Society of Nuclear Medicine (CSNM) worked together to translate the 2010 Single Photon-Emission Computed Tomography into Chinese. "The Chinese version of this guideline for myocardial perfusion imaging is necessary and timely," said CSNM President Yaming Li, MD, who along with Jianming Li, MD, reviewed the Chinese translation. This translation is the first of many collaborations ASNC and CSNM are planning to help provide Nuclear Cardiology educational resources for physicians in China. ASNC thanks INVIA Medical Imaging for grant support but assumes sole responsibility for all aspects of the guideline's educational and editorial content. HFSA Last year Medicare physician payment reform was finally enacted into law. This law, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, repealed the flawed Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula that had served as the underpinning of Medicare physician payment for many years. To replace the SGR, a new payment system will take effect in 2019. HFSA is committed to providing its members with reliable resources to help learn the basics of MACRA and guide future decision-making about opportunities for participation in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) or in an Alternative Payment Model (APM).
Recently, a new proposed rule was released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to outline the Agency's thinking about MACRA implementation. HFSA is analyzing this proposed rule and will respond with comments within the 60 day comment deadline. The HFSA Advocacy Committee would appreciate hearing from you regarding any specific concerns you have with MACRA implementation. Please send your comments to in...@hfsa.org. Go here for links to important MACRA resources.
HFSA JCF is pleased to announce the publication of its second focus issue, to be available online on June 7. The issue will contain clinical research and reviewer papers on the topic cardio-oncology, as well as a consensus statement from the International CardiOncology Society and Canadian Cardiac Oncology Network.
In recognition of the high prevalence of heart failure in older adults and the need for additional research in this arena, the Journal of Cardiac Failure has issued a Call for Papers on Geriatric Heart Failure for a special focus issue to be published in December 2016. The Journal is seeking original research manuscripts, focused reviews, brief reports, and research letters that address any aspect of heart failure in older adults, including but not limited to basic mechanisms, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management, and prognosis. The deadline for submission of manuscripts for consideration for the focus issue is July 31, 2016. All papers will undergo expedited review with prompt turnaround. To view current and past issues of JCF, including author information, please visit the JCF website.

SCCT SCCT leadership commented on the results of a new study, a secondary analysis of the SCOT-HEART (Scottish COmputed Tomography of the HEART) trial, that shows coronary CT angiography leads to a more appropriate and effective selection of invasive coronary angiography for patients with suspected angina due to coronary heart disease. The use of coronary CT angiography also contributed to greater use of preventive therapies that led to a 50% reduction in risk for fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction when compared to usual care, largely including stress testing.

SCMR Cardiovascular MRI is a better prognosticator of risk for serious cardiovascular events than SPECT, regardless of a person's risk factors, angiography results, or initial treatment, according to a study published online May 10 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Researchers concluded that cardiovascular MRI is a "robust alternative" to SPECT for predicting patient outcome in terms of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), and the findings add "further weight to the growing evidence base for cardiovascular MRI in the diagnosis and management of patients with suspected coronary heart disease."
