Hello CCC members,

At the last meeting I was asked if there were any updates on the Main Street Renewal project. I did not realize at the time, that although the hydro-wire undergrounding situation is still on-going, the consultants were still designing and are ready to present the current options. You may already be aware of this, but I might as well let you know: there will be 2 Open Houses for the Main Street Reconstruction. Info below:

Main Street Renewal Open House 1: 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 17th in Saint Paul University's  Normandin Room, Laframboise Hall, 249 Main Street.

Main Street Renewal Open House 2: 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 18th in Greenboro Community Centre, Rooms A & B, 363 Lorry Greenberg Drive.

At both open houses the alternative designs for rebuilding Main Street will be presented at a public open house hosted by the City of Ottawa, The proposals  that will be on display are the result of the City working with community, business and other representatives over the last eight months.  A Main Street that is better for pedestrians and cyclists has been a critical consideration for community representatives on the Main Renewal working group. Construction is scheduled to begin next year and will be completed in 2015.

Please note that there will likely be heavier opposition at the second open house. If you wish to support Main Street as a complete street and offset some of the opposition to that, then please attend the second open house OR attend both! :)

Thanks and see you there!

I have not been involved in this but I am wondering why the City would be holding an open house for Main Street at the Greenboro Community Centre which according to Googlemaps is nowhere near.  Is this tied to the development of another street?

Can anyone please advise?

Lorne,

I'd asked myself the same question as I gather it's not something the City does all that often.

In principle, it strikes me that there's nothing wrong with affording those outside the immediate Main Street catchment area an opportunity to provide input if they are likely to be materially affected.  Indeed that strikes me as a good thing & as a worthwhile precedent  with potentially interesting implications for this and other comparable City projects.

Joanne Chianello's Citizen piece today makes  it clear that folks to the south who use Main street as a commuter route into down town and that a reduction of Main St from 4 lanes to 2 likely would have an impact on them.As many of us in the CA community see it, the City engages in genuinely meaningful/effective public consultation all too infrequently.  Widening the net is a good thing, methinks.

I'm all for the "Complete Streets" program (including on Main Street) and  recognize  that inviting commuters from the South to express their presumed opposition risks but I do not rule out the possibility that good positive ideas could come out of a public dialogue between those for and those against it.

Ottawa needs to evolve away from its car-centered transportation culture.  The "Complete Streets" program is a good step in that direction.  I see the Main Street project as a primal test case to see if City staff and Councillors have the courage of their convictions.

I would love to see it applied to our area and IPD in particular.  Oh to dream!

Roland

I hope that the meetings don't latch onto the misguided comment in Joanne Chianello's column where she suggests that building the AVTC would relieve congestion from Main Street. (Doing so would only feed more traffic to Main in a variety of ways that need not be discussed here).

This would be something to watch out for for anyone who happens to go to the meeting(s)

Lorne.
We too are confused.  I wrote to the City planner in charge and she only said that they had been advised to have the second open house, no further explanation.  I believe our Councillor also objected.
It appears to me to be a last-ditch effort by the 20th century traffic planners in the City to muster support for prioritizing the automobile over citizens, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users; in spite of Councils declared preference for active transportation, transit and "complete streets".
I'm not aware of any other instance where one community was given the courtesy of an open house to discuss a development in another community.
I hope we can count on the support of the Hampton Iona Community Group when our street proposal comes before the Transportation Committee in July and subsequently to Council.

Although this seems to b a recent development, we had the example of the open house for the recommendation of the interprovincial bridge corridor using the Aviation Parkway, Kettle Island and Montée Paiment in Gatineau being held at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans, 11 km east of the selected corridor.

I believe that one (1) open house at a large venue like the Skenkman Arts Centre to serve multiple communities/areas (Aviation Parkway, Kettle Island and Montée Paiment) for an interprovincial bridge is quite different from a reconstruction of a road in a local community. I understand that some commuters from Alta Vista and other surrounding communities use Main Street to get downtown, however those users/interested parties are more than welcome to the open house within the community they commute through.

Now, whether we think two open houses in two communities should have been allowed or not, there will be two open houses. So please attend. This is 2 opportunities to have your voice heard.

I’m glad the emails have stirred up conversation – Now let’s bring that conversation to the Open Houses on Monday and Tuesday.

Thanks and see you there,
