Results from DEP water testing
Hi Henry,
This testing doesn't really address some long term issues. For example, will this stuff accumulate or bio-accumulate? Other toxins accumulate in fish, for example.
We know the radium can accumulate in bone. Strontium also.
Does any of this stuff drop out in sediments near the discharge points? Is the DEP sampling that? Are all rivers with these discharges being tested?
Wasn't this stuff being considered as part of the EPA study?
The treatment process can be differing in technology. Therefore, are there other species that aren't removed? How about the bromide? That can create cancer causing compounds when reacting in chlorination processes.
Also, the nature of the waste will likely be highly well-specific. Will this be on-going testing then? Who will pay for the testing? (let me quess!)
Perhaps if this info had been released earlier, I'd be less on guard. Instead, it took a NY Times series to light a fire in the communication process. And then I have to put up with the snarkiness of some of the official and "semi-official" rebuttals.
I especially was displeased about Hanger's comments that some of the DEP docs the NY Times quoted were perhaps in error, due to possibly inaccurate or late info being supplied to the DEP. Or perhaps the data was collated inaccurately or late because the DEP was low on administration staff. (remember those DEP staff cuts with the earliest budget cuts? Subtitle this: rebuttal to the Gasland rebuttal)
This is supposed to make me feel more reassured about their tracking system? And I'm supposed to look down upon the NY Times because of a DEP record system that apparently has faults? Really? Doesn't it just mean we find out about the mistakes & errors quite a bit after the fact?
I'd like to know if the DEP has a routine 3rd party QA certification system in place that audits them. Makes me realize how much more digging needs to be done.
Sorry for the rant.
Sincerly,
Angry Guinea Pig / Pissed Off Taxpayer (yes, going up for me but not the "infant" industry!)
P.S. Final question-- how do you feel about water softening salt tablets being made from this waste? (is that the Williamsport one that's planning to do that?)
