Assemblyman Martin Garrick (R, Solana Beach) opposes Senator Kehoe’s bill which would restrict construction of freeways along the California

Coast.   Here is what he sent out.  You can click the link at the bottom to take his survey.  I urge all of Assembly Member Garrick’s constituents

to participate in this survey.

Clearly members of Citizens Against Freeway Expansion could not possibly disagree more with Assembly Member Garrick.  Please note that he

is circulating the survey AFTER already making up his mind to oppose the bill.

CORRECTION to previous email:  I gave the SANDAG email address incorrectly in my message Monday to respond to the SANDAG RTP 2050.  Correct email address is:

SB 468 Will Halt Improvements to Highway 5 Tell Me What You Think

Improving Interstate 5, San Diego's most vital north-south artery, has been a part of the region's long-range transportation plans for more than 20 years. Now that those plans are ready for implementation, legislation has been introduced, SB 468 View PDF sb_468_bill_20110329_amended_s.pdf, that would halt the freeway project and result in costly delays.

There have been minimal improvements to the I-5 corridor since its original construction in the 1960s and 70s. Since that time, much has changed. In 2004, two-thirds of San Diego voters approved Proposition A to continue the region's local sales tax and specifically fund highway projects like those slated for I-5. Collectively, they support providing a balance of choices to safely reduce traffic congestion.

Plans for the I-5 corridor have been publicly vetted.  SB 468 would prevent this project from moving forward, jeopardize the use of Federal funds and break promises made to taxpayers who live and work in the region.  Effectively, SB 468 would impose extensive, new and additional requirements.  As it stands, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) already ensures that transportation projects are properly scrutinized to carefully address environmental and community impacts.  Adding even more layers of oversight would likely delay the I-5 project dumping increased costs on the backs of already cash-strapped taxpayers.  San Diegans simply can't afford SB 468.

I would like to hear your views. Your opinion is vital to ensuring the region has a balanced transportation system without making the process more expensive to complete.
