All,
My position along with the Sierra Club, Mike Bullock and others is
in opposition to any further expansion of I-5 until the region has
fully invested in public transit and mobility. I-5 today represents
a significant, sunk investment. Studies and experience show freeway
expansion induces more traffic ... what else would one expect in the
absence of alternative transit?
An alternative action is to revoke SANDAG's use of Transet tax
money. It is
our money. This money ought to be in the
hands of a small dedicated regional and integrated transportation
agency. That agency ought to form an umbrella organization with our
neighbors: Mexico, Imperial and Orange Counties to create a
world-class regional grid that would tie air, high-speed rail, and
all other modalities. The formation of this agency could be
accomplished if there was the political will for a ballot
initiative. That can be done in San Diego!
This should be done. Look at the Bay Area. Three counties joined and
overcame all the political and financial issues and created a
world-class system to move people efficiently. See
http://www.bart.gov.
Isn't it time for San Diego to start thinking and acting as a
world-class city? Or, are we doomed like lemmings by SANDAG,
CALTRANS and their planning robots?
