On January 7th in Albany, New York, we will come together to celebrate an incredible victory for science, public health, the environment, and our movement, and will give thanks to Governor Cuomo and speak to the importance of this decision for the whole nation and the opportunities ahead for renewable energy!

This year at Governor Cuomo's State of the State we will be thanking the Governor, but also asking for renewable energy in NY so that our fossil fuel needs do not give the gas industry a foot in the door in the future. It is right now technologically possible for New York State to transition to a 100% renewable energy infrastructure, but it takes the political will of Governor Cuomo to do so.

Tickets for the bus from Buffalo &Rochester to Albany are available so that western NY can turn out as a region to thank the Governor and ask Governor Cuomo to create a comprehensive renewable energy plan in New York to make our state sustainable. Governor Cuomo exercised the precautionary principle by banning fracking in New York, impacting generations to come. We now look forward to making New York the renewable energy capital of the United States, leading the nation to a healthier future.

Last month at our Western NY Drilling Defense meeting Dr. Fred Millar called in and spoke on "Hazardous Cargo: Shipping Bakken Crude Oil by Rail." This month we will be organizing against oil trains using our new wealth of knowledge. With very little public awareness and no study of environmental impacts, the oil industry has made New York a dangerous pipeline for crude oil that snakes thousands of miles by rail, barge and ship from oil fields in North Dakota and elsewhere, to refineries on both coasts. Bakken oil trains from North Dakota are traveling across New York State and through the City of Buffalo. Find out more about the dangers associated with Bakken oil trains and how to fight them!

We will also be discussing next steps in the anti-fracking campaign in New York, including shifting efforts to renewable energy. Join us for our next community meeting!  The meeting is open to all.
