Unfolding the story of a Governmental Pandemic

We cordially invite you to the release of two reports on 13th Feb 2024 at 3:00 pm in the Press Club of India, New Delhi, which looks into the government’s response to the pandemic and the impacts of the pandemic on street vendors in Delhi, respectively.

Four years after COVID-19 was first reported in the country, many different communities, specifically those from the vulnerable sections continue to reel from the poor management adopted by the government to handle the pandemic. The number of people wronged during this time is many. The majority of the population has been left under extreme stress to fend for themselves since the pandemic and the government takes no accountability. The fact that India is one of those countries where the internationally declared numbers for excess death during the pandemic stand at ten times the number than what is being told to us by our government, has brought no shame to our rulers! They continue to be indifferent to facts, encouraging people to ‘move on’ from the pandemic while taking on a steady, uncompromising mission to appease the religious majority of the country. With a whopping INR 1,800 crore spent on the construction of Ayodhya Ram Mandir, it is clear where the government’s priority lies. The government’s blatant disregard for the Constitution and democracy can be noticed in their arrogant thought process of governance, where the citizens are not cared for but there is due care in ensuring the growth and prosperity of the elite, corporations, and multinational companies. Government efforts since the pandemic have created multiple opportunities for growth for Adani and Ambani, while the poor and neglected struggle to navigate their everyday life with no government relief in sight. The lockdown has since then become a literal lockdown on democracy itself and the government finds it convenient to use it when it suits their electoral and political purposes.

The lack of accountability and indifference towards those suffering is alarming and shouldn’t go unchallenged. The citizens’ initiative, Public Inquiry Committee and Peoples' Commission (PC-PIC) - covidtruths.in, has been organising public hearings and researching several aspects of the pandemic in India and is bringing out two crucial reports.

The first report titled ‘Shambolic Governance; Unfiltered Loot. The story of pandemic governance in the national capital, documented through government notifications and people’s stories’ analyses the Delhi health notifications by MoHFW, DDMA, and ICMR on COVID-19 on how the state tackled the pandemic and addressed people’s concerns. The research found that despite many cases of patient rights violations reported from different parts of Delhi, *only 3 notifications were issued addressing the same. Additionally, we saw people mortgaging their houses just to get coffins back from hospitals because of the exorbitant loot incurred on the cost of treatment, the research found that only 2 notifications catered to the aspect of price capping on treatments.

The second report titled 'Perils of Pandemic: the unheard voices from the streets' is a report based on public hearings conducted in collaboration with the Hawkers Joint Action Committee from Delhi’s Street vendors who went through much during and after the pandemic, including livelihood loss and evictions. It was found that 95.6% of street vendors faced an adverse impact on their income due to the pandemic and 73% are currently in debt.

Both reports will be released on 13th February from 3:00 pm in the Conference Room, Press Club of India, New Delhi.

We hope you will join us in asking questions of accountability.
