I hope you read this news attached. Government seems to be determined about it and is going ahead inspite of apprehensions. So what is your view on this? Are we just going to debate issues without any concrete solutions? Do we need to modify our strategies so that we achieve some semblance of reasoning or purpose? We need to discuss and deliberate.

With warm regards

Centre okays data collection norms for UID

NEWDELHI: The Centre on Tuesday gave in-principle approval for adoption of standardised approach for collection of demographic and biometric attributes, including fingerprints, iris scan, of residents bodies for UID project.  The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Unique Identification Authority of India related issues (CC-UIDAI), UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani told newsmen here. To provide unique identity numbers to all residents of India, the UIDAI proposes to collect data through various agencies of Central and state governments and others who, in normal course of their activities, interact with residents.

These entities are described as “registrars” of the UIDAI. Explaining the significance of the decision, Nilekani said a final approval will make it essential for any data collecting department or organisation in the country to adopt the UIDAI standards. This includes collection of demographic (name, age, sex, age among others) and biometric attributes of residents namely face, all ten fingerprints and iris scan for the UID project.

“It was also decided to include data of the iris for children in the age group of five to 15years. The same standards and processes would be adhered to Registrar General of India for the National Population Register (NPR) exercise and all other Registrars in the UID system,” Nilekani said. He said the biggest partner for the UIDAI was the NPR followed Rural Development Ministry through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The first set of the 12-digit unique set of numbers will be issued between August 2010 and February 2011. DH News Service

Dear Somasekhar,

Thanks for drawing attention to this. I did see the news. There are many decisions of cabinet that are later dropped. The Nuke &  GM regulatory bills are two recent examples. I am hence, least bothered by such controlled leaks of Govt.

No, we are not just debating this issue. Concrete plans are there to take on the might of the Govt. We would do so at the appropriate time. For now we are on a program of building public opinion on it and creating awareness. There is considerable support for what we are trying. I wish CAF members take an active interest in this initiative. However, this needs networking with organisations with which, some in CAF may not see eye-to-eye.

Regards,

Mathew
