Hi all,

Hope you're well, and sorry to barge into the group like this! I was wondering if you could help me? I'm writing an article for the FT on London's public bike scheme, analysing the pros and cons of keeping it available to the public during lockdown (health benefits versus risk of transmission etc.). Do you have data on how many people are using NYC's Citi Bike scheme from the last month? I can only find stats for February on the website, but March (or April, if you have anything that recent) would be more useful. In London, for example, usage has dropped 35% year-on-year; in Paris, it's fallen 80 per cent in a month. If you had anything comparable for NYC I would be extremely grateful, and obviously cite you in my article.

Sorry if I'm barking up totally the wrong tree - it's been a long few weeks!

Thanks and best wishes,
George

George, I'm currently doing some data analysis on Citibike data that might give info similar to what you're looking for. Hoping to speed through that over the weekend. I can share the results with you once done. Does that work for you?

Hi Shravan, thanks so much for getting back to me. That would be perfect, yes! The article won't come out until Tuesday, probably, so any data you have could definitely be useful.

The only thing the NY Post says is this: "Ridership on the Lyft-owned bikes through the first 11 days of March was 517,768, a 67-percent increase compared to the same period last year, the city said Thursday."

I saw that, yeah, v interesting. I've never actually been to NY, so don't known much of the differences in terms of size/layout/planning with London.
What's your general take on using the bikes over there? I'm a little confused as to why Londoners haven't been discouraged from renting them - most of the people doing so here are cycling for leisure, and only some are wearing gloves/disinfecting etc.

Hi George,

Unfortunately I think Citi Bike posts data quarterly, and they are a little behind in the uploads.  You can try reaching them directly.

It's an interesting article, I can say from my experience I have ridden a citi bike about twice in the last month.  I just have been staying home and not going any place requiring me to just any form of transportation.

I have been going on bike rides though, but I've been opting to use my personal bike.  I feel safer with it knowing it's mine, and it's better for going on the longer weekend rides that i've been doing.  I'm sure most people feel the same way.

At the same time, I'm happy knowing that Citi bike is still available.  I think what you will see is when restrictions start to ease and people start going back to work, they will be quick to jump on Citi Bike's rather than the crowded subways.  It's much easier to be socially distant on a bike, and after weeks of not being close to people, it might be hard to jump back on a crowded subway car.  I'm not sure, but I think in the coming weeks and months, you will see an uptick in bike usage, and they will play an important role in alternative forms of transportation that allows you to remain socially distant.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I've reached out to Citi Bikes and others, hope to hear back soon. The 67 per cent rise in usage reported by the NYT between March 1 and 11th is quite interesting, if nothing comes of my request.

I reckon going for a cycle twice a month is great for the soul and to be encouraged. I use my housemate's about that often. In London, we're seeing record numbers in terms of hires per day (alongside a broader drop in weekly usage) in part because people aren't being encouraged by Transport for London to use the bikes sparingly. Most - but not all - of the people I interviewed (from 2m away at least!) brought hand sanitiser with them to disinfect the bars, but hiring still seems unnecessarily risky to me, considering how many are currently dying in London, how long the virus can survive on surfaces and how frequently we touch our faces without knowing it. Walking is also great! In France, apparently, you can't even jog let alone cycle during the day - you have to walk.

You make a great point. I think it's good London's bikes are still available to the public, if only because it would be over-the- top to ban them. You'd rather bike than get the bus, or, god forbid, the underground. I hadn't considered yet how much more popular public bikes will be among commuters once people start going back to work. There are 12,000 in London - I  wonder if that will be enough?

*12,000 so-called Boris Bikes. We have plenty of Lime bikes, Uber's Jump bikes, and several others, too. Maybe a better question is whether we have enough bike lanes, and whether we should pedestrianise vast swathes of central London. That would be awesome.

I'm currently doing some analysis on Citi Bike usage in March with respect to COVID, though don't know that it will be ready by Tuesday. I have a few thoughts and some info to share. First, the March raw data is available for download now. It went up one week ago. You can find it here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/tripdata/index.html (see 202003-citibike-tripdata.csv.zip)

It's interesting that the city released data saying the system saw an 67% increase in ridership over the same period last year. While that may have been true for the first 12 days of the month, it didn't hold. The systems increase dramatically each year as more stations come online, so I thought comparing I think Feb 2019-March 2019 % change compared to Feb 2020-March 2020 change might be more accurate to assess. Those numbers for trips are:

Jan 2019: 967,287
Feb 2019: 943,744
March 2019: 1,327,960

Jan 2020: 1,240,596
Feb 2020: 1,146,830
March 2020: 1,048,575

I threw January in there for good measure just to give a better sense of the system growth year over year. February is a shorter month, so it makes sense that it dips each year. Based on Jan-Feb-March 2019 you'd expect a significantly bigger March 2020. At the same time, by mid-month basically everything else was shutting down -- universities (so far fewer student trips), jobs (significantly less commuting). All that being said, 1 million+ is still a lot of trips! The strange thing with the data is that while every other month has a section "starttime" and "stoptime" that includes the date, the date was omitted from those values in March 2020, otherwise we could really compare when the true reductions in use occurred as the disease progressed and more people have bene encouraged not to travel outside unless for necessity. With the numbers still at 1 million+, you can assume many people are riding for recreation and health, and the free passes given out to essential health care workers are being utilized as well.

Best,
Becca

Wow, you're awesome Becca.

I just checked the data, and if you click on the individual start or end time and look on the bar in excel, they do have the dates!!  NY PAUSE started right at March 22nd, and you see a precipitous drop off of rides right after that if you scroll down the data.  This might be my hypothesis, but it also seems that between March 17 - March 22nd, there was also an increase in riders, as that's when people started worrying about the subway, and work started being canceled.  Once everything got cancelled, everyone withdrew from ridership.  But this data shows bike shares play a really big role in the period between full lockdown, and complete return to normalcy.  And right now, it seems we may not be going back to normalcy for awhile.  This data supports the conclusion than, that bike shares will be really important as we start to ease restrictions but still have yet to have 100% workforce, and are hesitant to jump on the subway/underground.

Update:

From 3/1 - 3/7: 329,487 rides taken

From 3/8 - 3/14: 380,768 rides taken

From 3/15 - 3/21: 204,328 rides taken

From 3/21 - 3/31: 133,990 rides taken

3/15 was when Cuomo announced NYC schools would be closed, which really dealt a strong blow on people, so you do see the rides fall in response to that.

But, from 3/8-3/15, you see a pretty great amount of rides taken.  A follow up would be to compare that to subway rides taken during that period, and also rides from last year, but to highlight that time, 3/7 was when Cuomo announced a 'state of emergency.'  Some people had started to work remotely, and people became a lot more aware of Covid.  Yet, they were still using bikes.  Again, just trying to use the data to support the argument that we are going to need bikes, bike lanes, pedestrianized spaces, in the coming year for sure.

Hi all,

I'm working on something similar with a quick dashboard comparing March 2019 and March 2020 data. Can filter data by custom dates, station of origin, or neighborhood of origin, with outputs for total number of trips and average trip time. Map also shows a visual of where trips end in relation to origin station. Let me know if anyone is interested in taking a look.

Thanks!

Becca, thanks so much. I thought the 67% rise sounded odd! That's so helpful to learn about the increase in the number of bikes year on year - as you said, it's way more interesting to compare Feb 2019-March 2019 with Feb 2020-March 2020. Mind if I use that for my piece?

Excluding Jersey City data, I have 109,120 trips from March 25-31, 2020. Same period for 2019 is 380,594, which excludes the entire Bushwick station expansion. Also interesting average ride for that period 2020 is 24 minutes vs. 15 in 2019.

I made this interactive flow map with a timeline showing March 2020 NY Citibike trips:
https://flowmap.blue/1irsB72tHvfjr8ZX1pWxlrQp8ApNuCjQfb3B4vQCg6Cs

You can clearly see the effect of the lock-down. There is a very significant reduction in the second half of the month:

March 1st - March 16th:  775,247 trips
March 16th - March 31st:   321,790 trips

Hi Steer and all,

It is very interesting to look at the use of bike share service during the lockdown across different cities. Can you provide the references to the recent bike usage of London and Paris? It would be great if the data is open.

I am also interested to know why people use the bicycles and how the trip purpose differs from normal. This can be reflected from the flow patterns of bikes.

Best Regards,

Huanfa

It's a bummer because it won't allow you to publicly embed any visual that uses the ArcGIS for power bi add in. Although I think if you log in with an account you can view it on the web through that link. If you have the power bi desktop app installed, you can open it with this file also.

Hi Huanfa,
The London data is attached in the excel doc below - I had to call them up to get more recent figures, but still a useful page.
For Paris I used this page  https://www.velib-metropole.fr/map#/ and spoke with the PR team. Couldn't find the raw data myself.
Hope that's helpful

Hi guys.

Very interesting data indeed, I was just looking to the daily ridership myself and I just can't figure out the huge drop on the 23th of March (a Monday). It dropped below 5 000 trips but on the next day it rises again to 20 000 trips. It's the day, by far, with the lowest ridership in the whole month.

Best regards,
