Good morning, D,

There are three steps before access is granted:

Identification            Which is WHO you claim to be.

authentication          Proving/Validating who you claim to be by providing some authentication factor such as something you know (Type 1), something you have (Type 2), something you are (Type 3).

authorization            Access Criteria is provided to the user based on the user profile

The keyword validating indicates that you have already provided identification and you are now proving who you claim to be.

It would be a bit like your passport.   You claim to be a person, you prove that you are that person by providing to the custom agent something you have (passport), you are then granted access.
