n(n-1) / 2

Any other explanation...?

 Asymmetric is always times 2 ( public/pvt key pair). So answer is 16. Symmetric is N*(N-1)/2.

Yes you are right, 
For symmetric is (N*(N-1))/2  
For Asymmetric, each participant has 2 keys, private and public key. Since the question says 8 participants so each has 2 keys summing to be having total 16 keys.
