I uploaded a CIS/2 file from Revit. This shows some of the problems
with their CIS/2 files. The file contains an analysis model and a
design model.

In the design model, the joists obviously have the wrong orientation.

In the analysis model, the top-of-steel is wrong for some of the
beams.

Has anyone else seen these problems? Are there other problems? Do
you know if Revit is working on a fix?

Yes I have. These are common problems. In addition, the material
grade is wrong and some column lengths can be wrong depending on how
the modeler attaches the start and end position of the column to the
floor plate. I was talking to Revit a few months ago and they
basically told me that it was my problem to deal with. Hopefully more
people can pressure them to fix these issues.

I have seen similar problems in Revit. Unfortunately we could not
single out Revit as the cause. The steel detailer we were working with
used AutoCAD and an add-on package called ProSteel. The existing
structure survey was provided to them as an SDNF file.
The detailer imported the file in to ProSteel then sent us an analysis
model in a CIS/2 file to import in to Revit. That CIS/2 file had all
the columns rotated to face north.

I do not know if it was a failure in Revit or ProSteel or a
combination. We ended up rotating all the columns manually.

I've had very similar experiences with Revit CIS/2 files. I've run
multiple tests using Revit CIS/2 exports to SDS/2, Tekla and Bentley
Structural. Each test resulted in many translation and member
orientation issues. I worked through the issues with representatives
from both Design Data and Xsteel to determine what issues were caused
on there end and which issues were Revit problems. I also contacted
Autodesk with these problems, but got a similar response that Mike
received. They said they knew of the issues, but nothing was being
done about it at the moment.

Robert - I've put together NavisWorks models comparing:

1) A direct NavisWorks export from Revit
2) A VRML output from either an SDS/2 or Tekla model that was created
with a Revit CIS/2 file.
3) A Bentley Triforma model created with the same Revit CIS/2 file.

I'd be willing to share these results with you if you are interested.
I've already shared many of my experiences with Luke Faulkner (AISC).

Since we are almost exclusively modeling all of our projects in Revit,
we would ultimatley like to become confident with the accuracy of the
CIS/2 exports. This way we could eventually start to share these
models with the detailers to expedite the process.

Bob / anyone:

Do we know the contact name or names we / AISC should be talking to at
Autodesk about these problems. It seems that if they are identified to
them they should address the issues.

Mark,

I believe the CIS/2 export/import add-ons for Revit Structure are
being developed and handled by Robobat. Here is someone I was in
contact with for some other issues with the Extensions:

Rafał Gawęda
Product Support Specialist
Autodesk Sp. z o.o.
ul. Odlewnicza 68

Tel: + 48 12 639 26 16
Fax: + 48 12 633 88 64
Rafal....@autodesk.com
robobat...@autodesk.com

Also, here is the Autodesk representative we pushed out questions
through:

Kathryn Poulos
Autodesk Support Team
product.support...@autodesk.com

Hope this helps!

Robert, one other item I've noticed on the exports is problems with
vertical and horizontal bracing. These are exported from Revit as
beams. There is no way in the model (at least in SDS/2) to change
this to a brace without deleting and re-inputting the member.
