I'm stumped - any help is appreciated since I'm new to managing anything related to SQL. We're a small business using ProNest (steel plate nesting software). They have an option to setup an SQL database to track inventory. We have 3 users total. I am one of the users as well as the host for the database.
Following ProNest's instructions, my computer is all set up to host the shared database. The last step listed was to modify the "db.ini" file in the ProNest folder for the other users so that their computers know where to look to access my computer's database. However, the other users are getting errors when ProNest starts and attempts to connect to the database. I have SSMS installed and can log in to the database and view logs. Here is what I get during the failed attempts to connect: "Login failed for 'MYCOMPUTERNAME\Guest'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.20] Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5". This tells me the database is seeing the attempted connection from the other computer and blocking it. I assume this might have something to do with adding the user on our network to the Logins folder in SSMS.
The other computers don't need to install Express. You would typically use SQL authentication when you don't have a domain. Is this an option with ProNest? Otherwise you need matching logins and passwords on the PC that has the SQL Server database. And then you add them to the logins. And it becomes a problem with password changes which is why SQL authentication tends to be less problematic in your situation.
Thank you for the quick reply Sue! Below are the contents of the db.ini file on the other computers that ProNest uses to connect to my database - is this where I can change it to SQL authentication? If so, how do I do so and how do I set it up on the other computers to access the database? I can tell you on SSMS under "Security" settings for the ProNest database, it is set to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode".
As for the Windows Authentication method, are you saying I simply need to add the same user & password of the computer trying to access the database to my local users list? For example: if his login is "John" and password is "123456789" on his computer, that is the same credentials I would add to my local users?
Yup...that's what I was saying. Try it with one of the users - add them to the users on your PC using the same case, password, everything. Then add that login to SQL Server, map that login to the ProNest database. Did they give you any other information in terms of any roles they should be in or permissions in the database? It should be in the documentation you were following when setting this up. Should be..doesn't mean it's there ? But look through to find any info they have in regards to the setup the logins, users.
Sue - adding the user to my computer then adding it to the Logins in the SSMS worked! They are able to connect and edit the database. I believe the ProNest Shared DB exe modified all the proper SQL parameters (including firewall rules) during install - I'm getting no errors or issues when connecting. Thank you again for the quick and simple solution!
Out of curiosity what version of the database software are you using for pronest 2019? did you need to update from the 2015 database server software or was it compatible? The installer file i have is PNSharedDB11_00.exe.
Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of industrial cutting systems and software, recently announced a major version update to ProNest 2023, its advanced CAD/CAM nesting software for automated cutting. This new release contains a collection of new features and on-going enhancements designed to help customers improve their operational efficiency while reducing non-value-added tasks.
Finally, the software is even easier to use. Changes to the user interface include a new welcome screen and customizable ribbon. The welcome screen contains an informative dashboard that highlights training videos, application tips, and other valuable resources while the ribbon allows users to add, remove and rearrange tabs. Customers can save different ribbon configurations and easily switch between them as needed, to best fit their workflow.
Hypertherm Associates, a U.S. based manufacturer of industrial cutting systems and software, today announced a major version update to ProNest 2025 version 16.0 nesting software. There is a collection of new features and ongoing updates designed to help customers improve their operational efficiency while reducing non-value-added tasks.
For faster nesting, the new version of ProNest has some manual nesting improvements, such as a drag array and anchor part to cursor. Hypertherm has also added an automatic bumping functionality for added control as well as speed.

I created an animated lower third, nested it and thought I'd be able to use it as a template, only to find out that when I changed the title in the nest copy, it also changed the original nest. And to be perfectly clear, I did use "new title based on current title" when I stepped into the nest copy.
My work-around (just so I get the project delivered) was to just not include the title in the nest. Obviously I know you can duplicate a sequence and edit it without affecting the original so why not a nest??
I've been on Premiere Pro CC for about 3 months now but after 18 years on Avid Media Composer I was used to building lower thirds, collapsing them into submasters, copying and pasting them, then just stepping in and changing the text. So I'm a bit baffled that I can't seem to find a way to accomplish this.
ok...I tried copying and pasting the nest in the project window and for some reason it didn't work...but what DID work was DUPLICATING the nest within the project bin, then dragging it into my sequence and swapping out the title! So for me the answer was DO NOT copy and paste a nest WITHIN a sequence...duplicate it in the project window.
If you have a title in the original nest that you want to modify it for the copy, even if you use the "New Title Based on Current Title" you'll need to replace the old one with that newly created title in the nest copy - using "New Title Based on Current Title" never replaces a title, it only creates a new one.
Thanks for your response...guess I should have mentioned that yes, after creating the new title I lifted the old one out and put the new one in...the result is that my original nest now had the new title as well...that's the problem!
Hey thanks for your help, Meg...you must have assumed I knew to duplicate in the project window, not the sequence...I didn't know that!! So I guess when you copy and paste a nest WITHIN the sequence the copies are linked, but when you duplicate in the project bin...there's no link!
When you say 'duplicating the nest' within the project bin, I am doing just that. I have this nested sequence, a complex text animation from Motion Array, which has layers upon layers of nested clips, the final one being the text editable.
So I did the 'duplicate', but doesn't copy unique instances of all the nested clips + the text box. I have to go into the project window and copy/paste/rename all the nested clips associated with that nested clips.
Did you ever figure this out? Having the same experience with a MotionArray template and it's nests within nests within nests! Nightmare when trying to use the same one twice... If you managed to find a workaround I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!
Another solution that I just found is to duplicate the nested sequence in the timeline then right click the dupliacted clip and "Replace with After Effects Composition". I was able to edit/change the parts I needed without it changing the original clip.
You could always just open the nest in its own timeline, change the text, and export it (as ProRes probably, with alpha if you need it). Keep that timeline as your template. Then just keep changing the text and rendering, and importing back in.
I'm thinking specifically of the folks that mentioned their Motion Array template here... of course this isn't actually what you're asking for, but will do the job. Those templates can be very complex and confusing to track which part is nested where. It can be done, and I know how to do it, but with stuff like that I'd rather not. I just did it the render way in a similar situation in After Effects... had some stock aminations I bought and comps were precomped into precomps fifty layers deep... and I just wanted the same animation twice with different text. It was so much faster to just type, render, retype, rerender.
Just tried this in Premiere Pro 2022 22.6.2 and didn't work. In my case I had nested sequences within the nested sequences. I had to create a new project only with the target secuence to duplicate (cloning template). Then copied and pasted from one project to the other. However I would first have to rename all sequences, videos and elements (added a # at the end) so that when the paste was done it created a new separate instance which I could edit freely. I hope there is a better way but that's how I solved it as a newbie on this.
