Messages

Through the effective use of climate information, decision-makers can make investment and planning decisions that are proactive, durable and robust. Effective use of climate information also minimises the risk that decisions will adversely affect – or increase the vulnerability of – other systems, sectors or social groups.

Long-term climate information is not necessary for every development initiative, but it will be crucial to the sustainability and effectiveness of many targeted investments and planning decisions (particularly long-term investments with long-lived implications).

Hi All,
Thought you might be interested in this publication. This one was especially interesting:

Zambia
Data collected by satellite and
compiled by the
University of Reading’s
TAMSAT programme has been used to
provide affordable insurance to farmers in
Africa. NERC funding then helped develop
weather index insurance products that will
benefit thousands of Sub-Saharan African
farmers. In Zambia, the weather index
insurance cover insured 7000 farmers
against severe drought or excess rain, leading
to pay-outs being made following drought or
excess rainfall amounting to over $40,000
and benefitting 3,700 farmers.

Hi all,

The attached is also a nice piece collecting experiences from a wide range of countries through the ASSAR project. All these pieces are worth reading to understand the environment in which decisions are made and how data/information is interpreted.

regards,

Mark.
