About the Volume

Artisan economies constitute a vital yet under-examined pillar of sustainable development, cultural continuity, and inclusive livelihoods across the world. Rooted in traditional knowledge systems and largely operating within informal or semi-formal structures, artisans contribute directly to poverty alleviation, gender empowerment, environmental stewardship, and community resilience—key priorities embedded within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Tourism—particularly cultural, heritage, rural, and creative tourism—has emerged as a major market system shaping the production, valuation, and circulation of artisanal goods. While tourism offers significant livelihood opportunities, it also introduces challenges related to equity, commodification, sustainability, and governance.

This edited volume critically examines the intersection of the artisan economy, SDGs, and tourism- and market-driven value chains, positioning artisans as active agents of sustainable and inclusive development, rather than peripheral cultural actors. The book adopts an interdisciplinary and globally comparative perspective, with strong empirical grounding with international case studies.

The volume is being developed for submission to a reputed international academic publisher through a selective and peer-reviewed editorial process.
