Where Does It Go? Plastics, Trade and Toxic Chemicals
December 15, 2022
9:00 - 10:00 am EST/3 - 4:00 pm CET
A Pathways through the Plastics Crisis webinar
Topic
Many people are concerned as well as confused about plastic pollution, hearing that “recycling doesn’t work,” yet companies are promoting the circular economy and governments are beginning to ban single-use plastics. As governments emerge from the first Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, so do questions about the state of the problem and solutions.
At this time, international trade in plastics is over one trillion dollars a year, 40% greater than previously thought (UNCTAD, 2021). Plastics continue to be produced, circulated and disposed each day at alarming levels, accompanied by toxic chemical additives, entering our soil, air and waters as well as our bodies. The debate continues about what and how much is produced and where it goes, across the “plastics lifecycle” and back into the economy and environment.
This webinar reviews the current state of this debate, the research and policy discussions shaping what actions are and are not being taken in lieu of the consequences involved.
Aim
To raise critical awareness and discussion of the current international trade in plastics, what is at stake, what steps are being taken and obstacles to overcome.
