TheDelicious Last Course features a new story centered around the Ms. Chalice character from the original game, explained in a lavishly produced new vocal song. She joins Cuphead and Mugman to gather ingredients for the suspicious Chef Saltbaker, who can give her ghostly body a corporeal form. In the meantime, she can now possess one of the living cups and become a playable character for the first time.

All that said, if you loved the original Cuphead, The Delicious Last Course delivers and then some. The new island presents a boss gauntlet featuring some of the game's most impressive, imaginative enemies. My favorite is a battle against a gang of insect bootleggers that has a pretty involved narrative arc. In addition, the animation has never been more impressive (and makes that Cuphead Netflix show look even more disappointing). The colorful chaos popped on my Nintendo Switch OLED Model as I stared intensely to keep track of everything.

In 2013, I started my Ziff Davis career as an intern on PCMag's Software team. Now, I’m an Analyst on the Apps and Gaming team, and I really just want to use my fancy Northwestern University journalism degree to write about video games. I host The Pop-Off, PCMag's video game show. I was previously the Senior Editor for Geek.com. I’ve also written for The A.V. Club, Kotaku, and Paste Magazine. Cuphead fans are used to waiting. After an eye-catching teaser, it took years before the original game finally launched in 2017. And now, after multiple delays and rereleases on new platforms, The Delicious Last Course wraps up this now-legendary classic cartoon-inspired shoot ‘em up. For $8, this DLC expansion not only gives you more bosses to challenge but also more tools to take them down. It completes an already fantastic experience and earns an Editors’ Choice pick for Nintendo Switch games.

You need to already own Cuphead to play the Delicious Last Course. Fortunately, the former Xbox exclusive is now available on all major platforms. You won’t need to beat the entire game to check out the new content, but you do need to play through the opening, at least.

We have a full Cuphead review with more details, but here’s a refresher. Cuphead’s stunning hand-drawn visuals evoke the lively (verging on dangerous) energy of 1930s cartoons. As Cuphead and Mugman, players go up against massive jazzy bosses to save their souls from the devil.

The gameplay, meanwhile, takes inspiration from a different kind of old-school. Cuphead is an action-packed shooter-platformer in the style of Contra, Gunstar Heroes, or Metal Slug. Players must survive an absolute onslaught of bullets coming their way while landing enough shots of their own to complete each stage. It feels overwhelming at first, but once you learn the patterns, you can skillfully defeat foes in just a few minutes. Still, Cuphead’s reputation for steep difficulty is very much deserved.

As Ms. Chalice, players can double-jump, slide without taking damage, parry using the dash move, and gain one extra hit point. She can’t equip new abilities using charms, the way Cuphead and Mugman do, but all three characters can purchase powerful new guns, including an incredibly useful homing crackshot.

All of this definitely makes the game more manageable for less skilled players. With Ms. Chalice, I was at last able to beat the final bosses of the original game after walking away years ago. However, I still wouldn’t call it easy. It’s not quite Funky Mode in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. On the one hand, I understand that Cuphead’s difficulty adds to its exciting satisfaction. Plus, the team at Studio MDHR clearly labored so hard to create the visuals that I don’t blame them for constantly killing you to make you see and appreciate them again and again.

However, everyone has their own definition of what makes something hard in a fun way versus hard in a tedious way. Like the original game, The Delicious Last Course can bombard you with so many projectiles that it seems nearly impossible to avoid them. To reach the final stages, you need to beat the bosses in their regular forms, not the easier, simple forms. The DLC gestures towards being more forgiving, thanks to Ms. Chalice’s expanded movement options, but a little more wouldn’t have hurt. Plenty of old-school games showered players with extra lives using cheat codes. Cuphead has only one extremely hidden cheat that comes with strict usage limits.

Some bosses even introduce totally new ideas. Like the original game, there's a dogfight stage where you control a plane and the game becomes a scrolling shooter in the vein of R-Type. But now there’s also a “dogfight” stage where you stand on top of a plane, balancing on its wings to change positions, as you shoot down a squadron of fighter pilots who happen to be dogs. There’s even an entire crew of bosses that you can't beat with your guns. Instead, you must damage them using carefully timed parries, made easier thanks to Ms. Chalice’s abilities.

To be clear, The Delicious Last Course exclusively features boss fights. You won’t find any run and gun stages, where you travel left to right like in a traditional sidescrolling game. These were a bit polarizing in the original Cuphead, but they did a nice job mixing up the adventure. Still, for less than $10, The Delicious Last Course feels very generous. Unless you’re an absolute Cuphead master, it should take you a few hours to hit the credits.

With The Delicious Last Course, Cuphead is the best it has ever been. The spectacular bosses are worth the punishment, and the extra mechanics make that punishment slightly fairer. It’s a must-buy for fans of the original, and if you’ve never played Cuphead before, you should definitely pick this up as well if you make that purchase. Bon appétit.
