I've added this section to the documentation that describes installing Perl's GD module (and all dependencies) on Mac OS X. The procedure is the same for Linux.

Hi Martin,
figured it out, following you description and just writing ./configure (without the --with commands) does it. Should have tried that earlier, I guess.

Thanks for reporting this -- I see that I got the --with-* paths wrong. They should be

--with-png=/usr/local
--with-freetype=/usr/local
...

with the value reflecting the -prefix path during installation of these dependencies.

I corrected this in the guide.
