"The Book of Love" is a song written by Stephin Merritt and attributed to The Magnetic Fields, an American indie pop group founded and led by him. "The Book of Love" appears on Magnetic Fields' three-volume concept album 69 Love Songs, which contains 69 tracks described as "love songs", 23 tracks in each of the three volumes. The three-volume album was released in 1999, with "the Book of Love" appearing in volume 1 as track number 12.
Trying to make a wedding playlist for my fiance and I. He's into metal and industrial, i really like triphop and jazz based music. Our shared favourite artists don't really do love songs (nine inch nails, enter shikari, st vincent etc) but we both really like these two.
"I think the song fits right into the themes of the album," Gabriel explained in a press release, "in the sense that i/o is about feeling and being connected to everything, and in a way, the next evolution of being connected to things is a feeling of love for everything.
"I was listening to a few of the songs and it's interesting because it's like putting on clothes and going 'Oh, this suits me' or 'That doesn't suit me," Micallef noted. "With 'Love Can Heal' I could see my images coming up when I was hearing it. ... I love artists who take risks and Peter's always chopped and changed and I like to do that too with my work and you know it doesn't just rest on this one thing."
Recently did some spring cleaning, and came across this CD which I remember how much I liked back then, especially this particular song. This is one of my faves from Peter, and resonates deeply for me, since goingthrough a very difficult divorce, this song really speaks to me. I love the keys, bass, and percussion onthis song. Major props to the musicians on this album, there is some serious talent on it.
This song is about depression, lonliness, fear, loss, longing. What I am uncertain is if he's letting go i.e.,giving up completely, or that he has hope that he will find love and happiness someday. The line "thistime I believe" is where I'm misled. I'd like to think on the positive.
I love this song. To me, this song is about something I can really relate to - the need for approval. That;s what the "addiction" really is. It's about needing to get a "fix" of approval from other people and though you know it's not healthy and you shouldn't need it... you still want it anyway. That's why when your "self-esteem is sinking" you need to get a hit of approval or "love". That's what this "old familar craving" is - and I think Peter is saying that it starts when you're a baby and something that can be useful and healthy can eventually long outlive its usefulness when you are looking for it from people who can't give it and yet you somehow need it anyway.
The song must be about Sinéad O'Connor, a song full of love, loss and desire. And all along I thought I heard him singing "I'm losing such a sensuality", which I personally will continue hearing going forward listening to this song.
It's about the basic human need to feel loved and to be loved. We all deny it at some point, but we each crave it to one degree or another. And each person, to some degree, fears emotional intimacy (while some, of course, fear sexual intimacy as well). It's about the push - pull of wanting to let go, but then changing course because it's too emotionally risky, so we push others away. And it's a never-ending cycle for some. The song most likely speaks to everyone on some level. I know that I desire love and attention, but at the same time I find ways to keep people distant (i.e. my weight). I laugh and joke and most think I am extremely secure. Nobody wants others to know they can be hurt easily. Good song in that it is relevant. I prefer his lil' froggy song due to obvious reasons (the beat and energy...of course), but this song is still good.
I chose this You Tube of Peter Gabriel The Book of Love for its creative use of love and romance without losing the lush feeling that Gabriel captures in this song. For me, the lyrics in Greek, which I cannot read, somehow added to the effect.
The song "Love Can Heal" by Peter Gabriel conveys a message of healing and the transformative power of love. The lyrics emphasize the potential of love to mend emotional wounds and offer solace in difficult times.
In the first verse, the song acknowledges that everyone goes through challenging situations, regardless of how they ended up in them. The crumbling of a metaphorical edifice represents a loss or failure. This leaves the person vulnerable and defenseless. However, the refrain repeatedly states that love has the ability to heal.
In the outro, "give into love" and "love can heal" are combined. "Give into love" is whispered by Peter, a reverb is created and the "heal" finally echoes back. At the end, only the "heal" remains as the song slowly fades out. At the same time, towards the end, certain keyboard sounds and guitar harmonics can be heard, which are again not present in the other mixes.
Towards the end of the track - after Gabriel's cry (which is again set far in the background) - the song does not gradually peter out, but continues, tirelessly repeating the chorus. A few musical attempts can be heard then: Gabriel whistles and hums along with the accompanying melodies.
Peter Gabriel is known for his introspective lyrics and deeply emotional storytelling through music. His songs often explore human experiences such as love, loss, and hope and convey a message that is both personal and universal.
There's another full-moon so there's another brand new Peter Gabriel single. This Is Home, which you can listen to below, is described by Gabriel simply as "a love song". Like all of Gabriel's single releases form his upcoming i/o album, This Is Home has been performed during his recent live shows.
I really love Peter Gabriel's Cover of 'The Book Of Love', a song originally written and performed by Magnetic Fields. Especially the strings are gorgeous. Too bad, but in the whole world wide web there's no original score for these strings available. So I tried to figure out, what the violins, violas and cellos actually do. Hope you like the result... :)
