My Accomplice director Stanley Brock has shot a short film based around the Venice Beach Football Club. It's a short documentary exploring how this unique football club brings together a diverse and marginalised community in one of the most iconic locations in the world - Venice Beach - turning it into an extraordinary and unlikely Mecca for soccer in the United States.

The narrative takes us through the story of the community around this unique football club. Through the different subjects, which the club has impacted, we explore why VBFC fits so perfectly into the hectic, punk rock vibe of the Venice boardwalk. It also allows us to learn more about the Venice community, and how it has been affected by forces such as gentrification over the years.

One of the central characters is from a very old school Oakwood family. Speaking with the grandma, we learn the effects that gentrification has had on community spirit, and why having a football club that brings the kids back to the old Oakwood park is a beam of hope.

Dana Stanton Fraser, Professor in Human Interaction in the Department of Psychology, is co-investigator on the project. The University of Bath is leading the lab based work exploring concepts such as empathy, social bias and attention in immersion VR, while collaborating with many external partners particularly the Research & Development team at the BBC. The Virtual Realities project is enabling an exciting body of work on immersion. It is great to be showcasing the first prototypes emerging from the project. We also look forward to sharing some of our results from both lab-based and "in the wild" studies of virtual reality in this space."

Dana says, "The Waiting Room VR is a moving piece about Victoria's experience of breast cancer. We are delighted it premiered at the Venice film festival and we will now move into a phase of evaluating audience reactions to the documentary".

You can view The Waiting Room via the Guardian Website. Victoria Mapplebeck is now working on an outreach programme that will give the film and VR experience life after the festival circuit, making it available throughout the UK in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The five NYFA student films that were selected include fiction, documentary and animation. The showcase will be introduced by NYFA alumnus Giorgio Pasotti, who has acted in Italian films such as the Academy Award Winning film The Great Beauty, After Midnight, and Salty Air.
