The hallmark of RSMI is not only the quality but also the selectivity and immersiveness of its programs. With 15 participants in the Program for Jazz, up to 35 in the Program for Piano & Strings, and 15 in the Program for Singers, fellowships in each program are highly sought after, and each fellow enjoys personalized guidance from the world-class faculty of headlining artists and scholars.
RSMI musicians each receive a fellowship to engage in a life-changing summer of professional studies and performances tuition-free. Fellows are invited to take full advantage of the myriad opportunities during their musical immersion at RSMI, including attending Ravinia concerts, working with the world-renowned faculty, and creating lasting connections with their peers.
Ravinia owns several homes within walking distance of the festival grounds, complete with kitchens, washers and dryers, WiFi, and pianos. These houses help to establish a residential feeling for the fellows, and provide a greater level of flexibility and independence. All fellows in the Programs for Jazz and Singers, and most of the Program for Piano & Strings, stay in these homes during their time at RSMI.
Our fellows and faculty foster a collegial environment and education-focused culture that provides an inclusive learning experience. Training can be challenging, but our program is close-knit and each resident brings a dedication to providing stellar patient care as well as a collaborative learning experience.

AMELIA DOWNS was a choral scholar at Selwyn College, Cambridge, England. For the past four years, she has been employed by the Braeburn International School in Arusha, Tanzania, where she has taught the British curriculum to children of all ages, led music clubs, choirs, coached singing and dancing for theatre productions, and managed other musical events. In particular, she has enjoyed incorporating Kiswahili songs and traditional dancing and drumming into her curriculum. Shehas also maintained a private studio teaching piano, violin and voice.
Millie is an active member of the music community in Arusha, where she manages events including a recent collaboration concert between Kenyan and Arusha choirs, workshops with traditional Tanzanian musicians, and evenings of English traditional dance. She also serves as secretary and education advisor on the Board of Directors of Shining A Light, an empowerment program for underprivileged women. Shining A Light teaches clients leatherwork, beading and textiles, business skills, finance, healthcare, English, reading and writing. Millie sees the philosophy of El Sistema as a powerful tool for transforming communities such as Arusha through music education.
From voting at the annual GRAMMY Awards to advocating for music people to championing music education and philanthropy, our membership powers everything we do at the Recording Academy. Each year, our membership continues to grow and evolve to reflect the ever-changing music industry, with every new class and every new member helping to cultivate a stronger, more vibrant, and more diverse music community.
As active members of the Recording Academy, members play a vital role in shaping the future of the music industry locally via their respective Chapters as well as nationally. Only Recording Academy members, in addition to media companies, can submit their music and works for GRAMMY Awards consideration. Voting Members also determine the annual GRAMMY nominees and ultimate winners each year. As well, members can propose amendments to the official GRAMMY Awards Rules and Guidelines, including proposals for new GRAMMY categories and major changes to pre-existing categories. Members can also run for a Recording Academy Board position or Committee, vote in Chapter elections, participate in member-only programs, and support fellow musicians through advocacy.

I like to think of it as a web made up of everyone who is anyone in the music industry. Because there are so many creators in the Latin music community, including songwriters and engineers, who are unaware that they qualify to become a member, I want to be a voice to spread the word and make sure my peers know about this incredible opportunity.
Thanks to our Recording Academy Voting Members for voting in October, and congratulations to them on producing an excellent, diverse slate of nominees for the 66th GRAMMY Awards! On Nominations Day, we saw countless heartwarming reactions and a whole new set of first-time nominees stamped "GRAMMY-nominated" in front of their titles. In all, over 900 music creators were able to announce their work was deemed excellent by their fellow music creators, true experts in their crafts.
By getting directly involved with the Academy's various divisions and initiatives, artists, creators and industry professionals can expand their participation in the music world to the next level. Our newest members, who just joined the Recording Academy as part of our 2023 New Member Class, perfectly embody this spirit. This newly inducted, record-breaking class represents a diverse group of 2,400+ music creators. In a demonstration of the Academy's commitment to remaking its overall membership, 50% of the new class are people of color, 46% of this year's class are under the age of 40, and 37% are women.
