In 2009, Canon camcorders shipped with four different discs: a digital instruction manual / music CD, a 'digital video solution' disc (with drivers and an image browser for photos), and two discs for the PIXELA application. Disc one has the transfer utility (for copying files from your camcorder onto your computer), and disc two is the actual editing program. This is a lot of discs for one camcorder and enough to make you pull out your hair, even if you aren't easily intimidated by technology.

Note: None of the PIXELA programs are compatible with a Macintosh operating system. You will need to use iMovie or another 3rd party application to transfer files and/or do video editing.

Overall, the software is a bit disappointing, considering the target demographic. If Kodak wants to provide its users with a simple post-production experience, they're going to need to focus on providing a more intuitive interface. The ArcSoft application is surprisingly inaccessible considering the bare bones functionality offered.

The Sanyo VPC-CS1 comes with a variety of software all one one compact disc, as well as a few smaller applications that are loaded on to the camcorder's internal memory. The main program is called TotalMedia Extreme for Sanyo and it is developed by ArcSoft. This editing program, as well as all the software that ships with the CS1, is not compatible on Macs, but does work with Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

Open your Web browser and navigate to a website that offers a free codec pack for Windows. Codec packs are collections of files and drivers need for media player applications to play videos in various formats. By default, Windows only plays a few popular video formats. Installing a codec pack lets you increase the number of video file types Windows Media Player and other media player application can decode and display - including the MTS file format used by Sony Handycam camcorders. Codec packs such as CCCP, K-Lite Codec Pack and Xvix are free and allow you to play the MTS files from mini DVDs (links in Resources.)

Click the "Play - Using Windows Media Player" option in the AutoPlay window. Windows Media Player opens and begins playing the first video file on the mini DVD disc. Alternatively, click "Open Folder to View Files" to open Windows Explorer, then double-click the filename of a video to open the file in Windows Media Player or your other default media player application.
