I have heard that Cinnamon Bay's Vendor Contract is up for
renewal this summer. This renewal process bears close scrutiny. CBI, which
currently manages it, will again bid. But, if there are other bidders who are
thinking about pumping some money into it to upgrade the facilities in a
substantial way, chances are that they would raise the rates,
and those of us who need an affordable place on St. John may be out of
luck.
In addition, I would make sure that any reservations that you have,
should there be a vendor change, are still in the system after a
changeover.
I believe the vendor, whoever it is, must be approved by Congress, since
it is a National Park. If this is the case, then I would urge all of us to
contact our Congressmen or Senators (not sure who approves) to ensure that
they appreciate the necessity of having affordable accommodations on St.
John.
With the loss of Maho campgrounds, there are not many options left for
the middle class to enjoy St. John. If everyone visiting St. John had to stay
in a villa, many of us would not be able to visit as frequently. This would
also have a devastating effect on the local economy - particularly the taxi
drivers, since most villa renters also rent a car.
In talking with the taxi drivers, they predicted that once Maho closed,
Cinnamon would pick up their business, but that has not been the case.
Instead, Concordia's business has picked up, and most of their guests also
rent a vehicle. Most taxi drivers now have a second and sometimes a third job
to help make ends meet.
Much of this email is my own opinion or my own conjecture. If someone has
the time, please look into this further and let us all know.
