Hi all,

I read that one can ship camping items ahead and Cinnamon Bay Camp will hold it for them for a fee. How does one go about shipping items back home. Do I have to go searching for a post office or can I have the post office pick up my equipment?  I wanted to ship my tent, non-perishables, etc.

The Cruz Bay post office is notoriously SLOW.  Allow plenty of time when you go in - don't think you can dash in there 5 minutes before your ferry leaves.
Also, use the one price "if-it-fits-it-ships" priority mail boxes for shipping down anything that will fit in them.  Nonperishables are heavy, so this will save you significant money and time - if you don't ship priority mail, it can take a lonnnnng time for your package to arrive.  On the way home, that's no big deal, but you don't want to arrive and not have a tent ;)

Thank you both for your reply. That was good advice and I will ship priority mail.

I'd love to hear how that all works for you. We've always rented the platform tents because we couldn't figure how to get a tent big enough to stand up in and the stuff to make us comfortable sleeping (getting too old to sleep on the ground!) as well as a cooking stove, lantern and pots/pans/etc. When you consider that we'd save $56 per night x 2 weeks shipping stuff might be an idea we could get behind. Any information anyone wants to provide would be welcomed. Bonnie N

the tents are great and they give you everything you need right down to the sheets!

post office is right in cruz bay....we are coming with hammocks this year, no tents even!  traveling/camping around BVI too.  we ship a lot of food stuff/cooking supplies, otherwise my GF and I have everything we need in our back packs for 2 weeks.  surprisingly easy.

Also, ask CBC EXACTLY how to address the package, including what goes in capital letters and where commas should go.  Addresses in the VI look just a little bit different, and somehow are likely to get lost if not addressed exactly right.
We've shipped boxes many times (but to Connections in Cruz Bay, not CBC) and our boxes have always arrived in about a week- never lost one.

FYI Bonnie, I don't know about shipping, but know that you'd have to get the boxes to the post office and the post office lines move slowly.
I do know that CBC will rent you a cot mattress, a gas stove, a cooler, a lantern, and a food box, for $5/day.  That's at least a couple of items that you wouldn't need to ship....

I knew that they rented equipment but are you saying all those items together only cost $5/ day, Minde?

Thanks. We camp in the same place for 2 wks and I like to bring what it takes to be comfortable. Probably wouldn't be a person who could do without a tent but more power to ya and thanks for sharing!

No, they're $5 each, per day.  Choosing just the ones that would cause you the most trouble or cost the most to ship might be helpful, though.

Thanks. With that in mind, I just looked at tents on sale. Found one weighing 15 lbs. packing to just 24" x 6". Thought for next year. Bonnie N

We tried shipping some non essential items,( lightweight chairs, table cloth, coffee, extra sunscreen) one year. We received it about 3 weeks after we got home. I would NEVER send my tent or other essential items!! It is just too unreliable. Pack your tent in a suitcase, carry on your bathing suit in a cooler. What more do you need!
