This Scala course from the creator of the language, Martin Odersky, is being offered again free next month. A couple folks took it in the fall and recommend it (Creighton, Geoff, BenK).

Functional Programming Principles in Scala

Learn about functional programming, and how it can be effectively combined with object-oriented programming. Gain practice in writing clean functional code, using the Scala programming language

Reminder: this course starts up on Monday. Several of us are signed up and may do an informal study group of some kind. I'll probably buy Odersky's book or maybe Scala for the Impatient.

This a great course. To get going quickly, I found Scala for the
Impatient the best and the Odersky books is better as a reference
manual.

Download the scala-ide <http://scala-ide.org/> if you do not already
have it as you will need it. The Scala Worksheet function in the IDE
is very helpful.

A number of us around Cincy are taking this 7-week course. It's not too late to start it (lectures and exercises for 1st week were just released Monday). Mike has created a Google+ Community for us to share questions and comments:

Why are we not using the study/discussion forum provided by coursera.org

Prateek, the coursera forums just seem like a place to advertise a group.

Feel free to join us:

Even though you can mix Function and OO with Scala I found the motto
is "Go Functional or go home" .
They make you leave the training wheels at home which was quite refreshing.

Prateek,
Yes, there are discussion forums for this class. But those are filled with all kinds of things from people around the globe. A group just for us Cincinnati folks seems a good way to develop the local Scala community, and interact with people you may have met or worked with or might in the future. Kind of like having local user groups even though there are many online sites, forums, presentations, etc. for Java and other technologies on the web.

It's refreshing.  I'm going to be interested to see how you write enterprise apps functionally.  Sounds like fun.  Love the theory stuff he gets into.
