Registration for the Summer 2024 Course is now open. Classes will remain open until filled by qualified students.
This course is mainly for rising seventh and eighth graders who are able to grasp abstract and complicated mathematical concepts at a very fast pace. Younger students with exceptional mathematical abilities and backgrounds may enroll with special permission.
The material covered will include topics from number theory, Euclidean and non-Euclidian geometries, Pick's Theorem, Heron's Formula, Mathematical proof, transcendental real numbers such as “e” and “pi”, derivation and use of the square root algorithm, unitary divisors, permutations and combinations, derivation and use of summation formulas, and RSA coding. In addition, students will develop new techniques and shortcuts for solving both routine and difficult math problems taken from Mathcounts, AMC8, and other middle and high school contests.
Students who qualify for programs such as CTY (Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth) or EPGY (Stanford’s Education Program for Gifted Youth) should have an excellent experience taking this course. An AMC 8 score of 15 or higher should also serve as an excellent predictor of success in the course.
If a student has not taken the AMC 8 contest (40 minutes for 25 problems, no calculator), previously given ones can be found on the Art of Problem-Solving website at: http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Wiki/index.php/AMC_8_Problems_and_Solutions. Of course, if a student is a strong member of his/her school Mathcounts team, that indeed serves as an excellent predictor of success in the Math Reasoning course.

July 8 – July 19

Vern Williams
Class Size:
12-15 students

This course is mainly for rising eighth, ninth, and tenth graders who would like to engage in high-level problem-solving up to the USAMO level. Problems will be selected from a variety of sources and problem-solving techniques will be developed and applied. Other topics of interest, such as advanced number theory, combinatorics, and advanced topics from geometry will be discussed. The student should have the ability to reason abstractly and the desire to solve challenging problems in order to be successful in this course.
We are planning to have two levels of APS. Dr. Ryan Grove is scheduled to instruct the more experienced students. He currently teaches problem-solving versions of Calculus and Post Calculus courses as well as Physics at BASIS Independent Mclean.
Students who were very successful in the Math Reasoning course and/or advanced math courses from CTY (Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth) or Stanford’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) should be prepared for this course. Acceptance to programs such as MathPath as well as a score of 90 or above on the AMC10/12 also serve as excellent predictors of success in this course.
Even though we will have two levels of APS, the entry-level section will be quite rigorous. Students will be assigned to their respective sections based on their mathematics course backgrounds and problem-solving experience.

Our Summer Chess Day Camps consist of chess instruction and play, as well as recreational activities. Camp starts at 9:00am ET and ends at 3:00pm ET. Aftercare (until 5:00pm ET) is available for an added fee. Campers will need to bring/pack a bag lunch each day.
Since 1992, we have been providing challenging instruction and making chess fun for students. Our nationally certified chess teachers are experienced with all levels of ability. Camp will be challenging and interesting for all and our focus is on improving chess skills through practice and lessons. The teachers place more emphasis on learning than on winning. Good sportsmanship is the key to having fun.

Thousands of students have participated in our camps, with many enjoying camp so much that they return year after year and dozens continue to play at a master level. Our students have won more than a dozen national championships, hundreds have earned academic college scholarships, and more than 20 have become national masters.
There will be about one teacher per ten students and enrollment is capped at about 32 campers for each week. Depending on the week and camp location, students rising into grades 2-7 or grades 3-9 are welcome.

Located in Chantilly, Va, our camps teach students research, critical thinking, public speaking, case construction, and other techniques necessary to excel in competitive debate and public speaking. VDA’s low teacher-student ratio provides students ample time and resources to improve their craft and find their voice!
July 8 – July 12
9 AM – 2 PM
Students with 0-1 years of debate experience
Students will participate in lectures, games, workshops, and debates to learn case construction, rebuttal, framework, and crossfire techniques. Debaters will research unique and challenging topics that are debated on the competitive circuit. High performing students are welcomed to take the advanced course after completing this class. Please review the curriculum page for the class schedule.
Class tuition: $500
Seasoned debaters will participate in Socratic seminars, workshops, and debates to hone their research, speaking, and debate capabilities. Our unique curriculum—covering traditional and progressive styles—will provide debaters with the critical thinking skills, research ability, and institutional knowledge to excel in local, state, and national circuit. Please review the curriculum page for the class schedule.

Debaters will participate in sessions each Saturday during August, which will cover advanced topics. They will learn additional research and critical thinking skills. Our sessions will also have deep dives into popular topic areas, like international relations and economics. The course is taught by VDA directors, based on their previous work with national circuit debaters and undergraduate students.
Class tuition: $250

For students that cannot attend camp dates or are looking for coaching during the season, private tutor sessions are available. Tutor schedules are flexible.
