APLUS: 2023 Spring Registration Highlights

Hello Parents and Students!

Register today for our 2023 Spring Semester to give your student the academic success he or she needs. The drastic learning loss experienced by students is still an issue that needs to be rectified. APLUS Education is here to provide the supplementary education your student needs to overcome the loss caused by the pandemic. Our qualified and experienced instructors, small class sizes, and rigorous curricula are key components in helping your student reach his or her highest potential.

We would like to highlight a few of our 2023 Spring Enrichment courses:

Tuesday Math Enrichment (1/31 – 5/20/23: 6-8pm)

  • Math 4 and Math 5: This combined course models after a MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) Compacted Math and 5. Students will master basic math skills that work toward building a strong foundation for understanding more challenging concepts later on.

Saturday Math Enrichment (2/4 – 6/3/23: 11:15-1:15pm)

  • Pre-Algebra 2 (IM)Students will understand proportional relationships, rational number operations, geometric relationships (i.e. measurements, angles), statistics and probability, functional relationships, and linear equations.

  • Algebra 1: Students will be exposed to topics including introduction to quadratic functions and introduction to one-variable statistics. Word problems and problem-solving skills will be emphasized.

  • Geometry: Students will cover topics including objective areas of shapes, Pythagorean Theorem, area of composite figures, area of hexagons, rotations of two-dimensional figures, parallel and perpendicular lines, equations of lines, coordinate geometry, quadrilaterals and triangles in the coordinate grid, area and perimeter in the coordinate grid.

  • Algebra 2: Students will build on their knowledge of Algebra 1 of linear, quadratic, and exponential functions to include polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Students will also study probability and statistics.

Thursday Writing Enrichment (2/2 – 6/1/23: 6-8pm)

  • Writing 1Students will perform close reading of a novel and analyze textual details to make an argument in a multi-paragraph essay.

Saturday Writing Enrichment (2/4 – 6/3/23: 9-11am)

  • Writing 2: Students will read several genres, including prose and poetry at the early high school level. Students will make complex arguments and demonstrate control over the standard conventions of English. Students taking this course should demonstrate the ability to read at an advanced level.

  • Intensive Essay Writing 1: Students will practice several of the most common types of essays, engage in frequent class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and take part in one-on-one student/teacher conferences to reinforce and improve their writing.

  • Intensive Essay Writing 3: Students will continue to practice writing different types of academic essays, with a specialized focus on developing style and voice in their writing. They will engage in class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and participate in regular one-on-one student/teacher conferences.

Tuesday AP Physics I (2/28 – 5/9/23: 5-6:30pm)

  • This course will cover some of the major units within physics, including Kinematics and Dynamics, focusing on fundamental theories and their algebraic derivations to give students a preview of what to expect.

Wednesday Book Study (1/11-3/15-23: 5-7pm)

  • Our book study courses aim to reignite the love of reading in students. Students will be expected to do a “deep dive” into the assigned texts and readings and be prepared for discussion as well as complete other activities.
  • Grades 5-6 (In-person)
  • Grades 7-8 (Virtual)
  • Grade 9 (Virtual)

Join us for our Elementary (Gr. 3-4), Intermediate (Gr. 5-6), and Advanced (Gr. 7-9) Test Strategy Prep classes where students will learn the best test-taking strategies and skills they need for success on standardized tests, as well as build overall confidence in testing. To register, click the button below!

We also have SAT Test Preparation Programs year-round. Please refer to our website for the different course offerings, along with the calendars for each of them.

We would like to highlight a few of our 2023 SAT Preparation courses:

2023 Summer Courses Registration is Now OPEN!

The 2023 summer courses will take place at Meridian High School in Falls Church City. Registration is now open and will remain open until all spaces are filled by qualified students.

You may register for summer courses through mail or online. You can securely make payment online. Once your registration is processed, we will email you a Paypal invoice to make payment.

MATH REASONING

(Session I only) : July 10 – July 21 (9 AM – 12 Noon)

Instructor:
Vern Williams

Class Size:
12-15 students

Place:

Meridian High School

121 Mustang Alley

Falls Church, VA 22043

$750.00

2 WAYS TO REGISTER

This course is mainly for rising seventh and eighth graders who are able to grasp abstract and complicated mathematical concepts at a very fast pace. Younger students with exceptional mathematical ability and backgrounds may enroll with special permission. Material covered will include topics from number theory, Euclidian and non-Euclidian geometries, Pick's Theorem, Heron's Formula, Mathematical proof, transcendental real numbers such as “e” and “pi” , derivation and use of the square root algorithm, unitary divisors, permutations and combinations, derivation and use of summation formulas, and RSA coding. In addition, students will develop new techniques and shortcuts for solving both routine and difficult math problems taken from Mathcounts, AMC8, and other middle and high school contests.

Students who qualify for programs such as CTY (Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth) or EPGY (Stanford’s Education Program for Gifted Youth) should have an excellent experience taking this course. An AMC 8 score of 15 or higher should also serve as an excellent predictor of success in the course. If a student has not taken the AMC 8 contest (40 minutes for 25 problems, no calculator), previously given ones can be found on the Art of Problem Solving website at:

http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Wiki/index.php/AMC_8_Problems_and_Solutions.

Of course if a student is a strong member of his/her school Mathcounts team, that indeed serves as an excellent predictor of success in the Math Reasoning course.

******

ADVANCED PROBLEM SOLVING

July 24 – August 4 (1 PM – 4 PM) Session II only

Instructor:
Vern Williams and Dr. Ryan Grove

Class Size:
We will have two levels and will assign a maximum of 12 students to each class.

Place:

Meridian High School

121 Mustang Alley

Falls Church, VA 22043

$750

2 WAYS TO REGISTER

This course is mainly for rising eighth, ninth, and tenth graders who would like to engage in high level problem solving up to the USAMO level. Problems will be selected from a variety of sources and problem solving techniques will be developed and applied. Other topics of interest, such as advanced number theory, combinatorics, and advanced topics from geometry will be discussed. The student should have the ability to reason abstractly and the desire to solve challenging problems in order to be successful in this course. We are planning to have two levels of APS. Dr. Ryan Grove is scheduled to instruct the more experienced students. He currently teaches problem solving versions of Calculus and Post Calculus courses as well as Physics at BASIS Independent Mclean.

Students who were very successful in the Math Reasoning course and/or advanced math courses from CTY (Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth) or Stanford’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) should be prepared for this course. Acceptance to programs such as MathPath as well as a score of 90 or above on the AMC10/12 also serve as excellent predictors of success in this course. Even though we will have two levels of APS, the entry level section will be quite rigorous. Students will be assigned to their respective section based on their mathematics course backgrounds and problem solving experience.
