The eighth edition of the Urban Lens Film Festival will run online from 18 – 21 November 2021 in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan and Institut Français. The festival is delighted to present 27 exceptional films from 15 countries in 18 languages. Here are some highlights to look forward to:

Filmmakers in Focus

In a newly introduced section this year, Urban Lens has curated select works of Tamara Stepanyan, Philip Scheffner and Oscar®-nominated Joshua Oppenheimer to be screened at the festival. Each of them has a wide body of work with unique formal preoccupations that inform their film practice. The filmmakers will be in conversation about their films and the contexts in which each of their work have been produced.

Masterclass

Artist and storyteller Nina Sabnani will be in conversation with Paromita Vohra and will speak about her work in film and illustrated books, that seek to bring together animation and ethnography.

Panel Discussions

The festival will host two conversations exploring the idea of Labour and the City - a panel and a book discussion. The panel will feature academics Neethi P and Paromita Chakravarti who will be in conversation with IIHS faculty, Gautam Bhan, to discuss the relationship between sex-work and how it has shaped colonial and modern cities.

In the book discussion, academic and author Debashree Mukherjee will be in conversation with architect Rohan Shivkumar about her book Bombay Hustle: Making Movies in a Colonial City and the cine-ecology that has contributed to the city of Mumbai.

The second panel, The Future of Cinema, moderated by filmmaker Shabani Hassanwalia, will have programmers and festival directors Bina Paul, Daniel Mattes and Rada Sesic reflect on shifting film-viewing practices and the space film festivals will occupy in the wake of the pandemic.
